When I worked as an apprentice at a body shop, we had that happen. Only $2k in work... Finance company paid it though. Then We had a guy that we spent 6 months and about $15g in parts for the motor, then the guy got killed in a car crash... I think the car is still sitting behind the building that went out of business.
