does a tuner exist for this engine

I was wondering if there is a decent tuner available for a 1996 5.0/5.8 vortec engine?

I dont want some goofy contraption that lets you select between a handful of predetermined tunes.

Id prefer a device that allows you to see on a laptop real time data and the ability to make real changes to the fuel and spark tables.

I know some engine computers have this support, many do not, I tried a search but came up with nothing.

I understand megasquirt offers this option but Id like options on something a little more complete, preferably a unit that offers a default that sets everything back to stock, should changes made royaly screw things up.

You can install the 12200411 LS based PCM. It has 2x the processing speed of the Black Box PCM. Then you can tune it with EFILive or HPTuners---maybe others too. The tune will be from an 01-02 Express/Savanna Van. I have EFILive and can give you a starter tune--If you get EFILive. The swap can be done with junkyard parts for under 100.00 and will take a first timer about 4 hrs to do. PM me your E-mail address if you want a copy of the Wiring File/Instructions. I have 3 different files--1 for 96,1 for 97,1 for 98-2000 Distributored Vortec Engines. This swap has been done on probably over 40 trucks that I know of. PacificP.com has lots of 0411 PCM info.

JET makes the JET DST (the revamped Tunercats OBD2). Tunercats OBD2 is still supported and is available from Moates if you buy the Roadrunner PCM Emulator.

I was fortunate enough to get a Tunercats OBD2 setup while it was still sold by Tunercats. For each definition file($80) you can tune as many trucks/cars as you want. Theoretically you can tune a Million 1996-97 trucks if you spend teh $80 for the def. file for the 96-97 Vortec trucks.

The 411 swap opens up a whole other realm of tuning and logging possibilities. You just need to use a 2001-2002 Express van calibration file. Teh 01-02 vans ran the Vortec 305/350 engines with a distributer while using teh GEN 3 411 PCM.

if you Bro want big power over 400hp naturally aspirated or less if force inducted, here is teh marine intake swap that allows you to drop the 19 pound per hour non-replaceble with higher flow poppets with normal fuel injectors.
