You'll need a puller that is adjustable. Something like this- http://www.ls1truck/temppublish/remove53.JPG
Matter of fact, this is at my house where kevin and i replaced his 5.3 with an ls1.
I would say yes on the pcm. They are the same pcm. You can also run your fans from the truck or fbod pcm. I'm not sure if you will benefit from the z28, but it would be a big headstart on the programming, especially if you use the pcm that came with your engine. That way you wouldn't have to change a bunch of tables. Although, kevins truck pcm ran the ls1 just fine with little tuning on the idle.
You'll be ok on the tranny, however, i suggest a vette servo and shiftkit. If you don't have a cooler, buy the biggest one that will fit.
Kevins truck is running a 14.3 with a stock block, 2400stall, pulley, volant intake tube, and Nelson Performance ls1 tuning. I'm sure it's capable of a tad more. You'll definitely suprise everyone at the track, plus no one will ever be able to tell it's an ls1. unless they see the little bit of aluminum peeking out.
good luck and post away,
allen
