The bent rod phenomenon comes from people dumping too much in at once or by dumping the Seafoam in a vacuum line with the motor off, letting it sit, then trying to start it. Just follow the directions on the bottle. I have used it on several occassions and have seen nothing but great results--and no bent rods...partly because I am not a dumbass and know how to read and understand directions.

As for the tranny stuff--go ahead and do a Superior shift kit--they work well and are not as intensive as the Trans-go HD2 kit. It is not completely necessary to have a tune done with a shift kit install. Since you are not going to do major modifications to the tranny, you should be fine.

Speaking of your tranny--what was the reason for it stalling out? You burn up the converter? Did the pump go out?

Here's the link where I first mentioned it.

I just stopped at my mechanics. He has the whole thing torn apart. I forget what he called the part but it is a circular frame maybe 6" in diameter with I think about 4 gear type things around the circumference and a roller bearing in the middle. Yeah, I know that was about as lame a description as saying the watchamacallit. Anyway, the roller bearing went out. He thinks the filter kept the metal filings from getting to the torque converter so hopefully we dodged a bullet there. I'm going to call him in a little while to see what parts he needs. The place with the parts is 40 miles away, my wife is headed there later today and she might be able to pick them up for him, if so that would speed up the repair.
