Hey,

No the timing cover doesnt have to come off to remove the oilpan, as for taking the oilpan off i think you can since the ls1 oil pan is shallower than the truck oil pan. Since your taking the oil pan off buy some ARP oilpan bolts for 35$(new) and install them with a new gasket and forget about leaks forever.
