Got 500 miles on the new 04, hooked up my 4500 WET RV trailer and
head down the road, staying in 3rd and running 70 @2800 rpm I kept
getting this smell like , raw crude or propane gas, not quite like a what
a cat smells likes, but similiar, smell happens in vent or recirc mode and
comes and goes, windows open would flush it out.

So ONE, why would I smell this IN my new truck? Ex leak? Anyone else?

Was the smell strong? Might be just a small exhaust leak or something. I kind of notice a smell like you are talking about when my truck is under load. I thought it was maybe the EGR or something, but you don't have EGR on your 04. The smell is very weak and comes and goes like you are talking about. Not too sure what it is.

It was like a dog farted for a few minutes strong. Yes it was under
a good load. And it came and went about 10 times over 400 miles.
But why did it get into my cab?

Not sure why or how it's getting in there. Did you run any wires through the fire wall or anything that might not be sealed there? I don't really know how it could have gotten in there.

A friend of mine had the same problem with his 02, it turned out to be tranny heat (burned oil I guess ), no tranny cooler though. This trucks can get all kinds of smell inside the cab because even with the a/c off it vents some outside air in the truck; this only happened when he was towing heavy loads so I don't know if it's the same problem but you can check it out just in case.

Hope this helps.

I have the towing pkg and alot of warranty left. Tranny fluid
is bright red and no smell. And what are those vents on the back of the
cab? One on each side?

My tranny temps don't even get to 185 under a heavy load so I know it's not that. The smell is more exhaust like than anything.

I believe those vents are to releave presure in the cab. There is always air coming in through the a/c vents, and the cab vents help to pull it through the truck I would think.

I don't know about a dog fart smell, but I do get a smell when under load like when I go up a steep hill. My dog's farts smell like a dead body, when I'm going up hill it smells like something is burning...like the tranny.

these forums are great at night.....who'da thought i would be reading about dog farts...i love it guys...keep it up!! although i have never had a foul smell in mine like you are describing...good luck figuring it out......i know that there have been a lot of people complaining about the a/c stinking some...but nothing like you are describing....this is more like a mold smell
