Fixing some rust on my block

Hey guys my motor has 54k on the clock and is from the north so its been through a few winters im sure and theres some rust on the block its not as if its really flaking or anything its just i show my truck and would like to make it look pretty nice... does anyone have any suggestions to go about this? thanks all!

Is the motor out of your truck? I work at a body shop and we deal with rust sometimes, I would hit it with some rust solvent like Liquid Wrench, and scrub at it with a course towel or cloth. That should get most of it and if not you can use some medium grit sandpaper maybe 180 or around there. If really concerned about looks clean up the area and use some metal polish or engine paint the same color as your block to top it off, but the iron should be fine and won't discolor. Good luck

yeah its an 2002 5.3 thats being swapped in and while its out i want to clean the rust up and make it look nice. my truck is pewter and i am color matching a lot of things. my interior is already done and will be doing the vortec engine cover and a few other plastics in my engine bay.

what do yall thing about a pewter block?

I think it would look pretty trick---go ahead and try to know off as much as nuch rust as you can, then primer it and paint it to prevent any more rust from happening...

should i just use the auto parts store high temp engine paint? or is that stuff crap?

Nice, I think the painted block would be cool, and the Vortec cover would really set things off. I color matched one for a good friend's truck and it makes all the difference. Just make sure you clean the block real good, and prime so your paint will stick, every detail counts. I'm sure it will look great!

The auto parts stuff worked fine for me, just get the more expensive one instead of super cheap-it's not much more but definitely acceptable just for engine stuff.

thats exactly what i wana do to my cover i want black letters with pewter paint did you just spray them black tape them off spray it white unmask it then clear it?

Actually I tried that but it became such a huge pain to tape everything off, and I tested the tape before I painted the black and sure enough it started to lift the white off so I resprayed it white and ended up painting the black entirely by hand with a super fine detail brush. It was a pain in the ass and pretty time consuming, because if you slip and get too much black on the white you're in big trouble. Just take your time and it will turn out fine, just remember to keep a little of the main color around to touch up with a toothpick if need be. Remember to clear it with a few coats and you're all set. I've seen a couple on ebay that had been painted by hand and the guy must have had Parkinson's or something because there were streaks and smudges all in the "Vortec" circle, so just take your time and it'll look badass, my buddy likes it a lot and I was pretty happy with it..I'm not sure if someone has a better way to do this but it worked for me and gives the best results IMO..
