<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DarknightOTC @ May 23 2007, 08:09 AM) </div>Actually, I only had two transmissions. The first one was never rebuilt. It was replaced with a second transmission as a "temporary fix" until I got the money for an FLT-L4. That trans never worked from the get-go b/c I bought it with the wrong input shaft/pump/bell-housing on it. DOH! Got that one rebuilt by a local guy that hooked me up with no parts fees. (yippee, right? wrong!Jeez, that makes the 3rd or 4th one you've been through. I bet you know the bottom of your truck pretty well by now. Well hopefully my stock stuff will hold together, I made sure it was 04 up so it wouldn't have too many of the inherit 4L60E problems, but who knows for sure. I know I have read a lot about not manually shifting a 4L60E unless you have changed out the valve body to be a manual. I think that sounds right...I'm not much of a transmission guy. Used to I could slam through every gear manually on my TH350 and never tore it up, but then again it wasn't electronic.
Isn't the transmission you just broke the one from NY or something? I'm shocked you broke this one.
Got the trans in, and that sucker wouldn't shift into 3rd or 4th automatically. Bought Transgo's SK-series kits (yet another mistake), and had the guy rebuild it again. Put that puppy back in, and it slipped, but finally went in through all gears. Pulled it out so the guy could check it out ONE MORE TIME. Got it BACK in, and everything seemed fine for my test drive. Went to the store to get my wife a Subway sandwich, and BAM! It broke yet again. Turns out the valve body was not modified correctly.
Now... fed up with all the crap I've gone through so far, I decided that there's nothing I have to lose. Bought Transgo's HD2 kit & Sonnax 2nd & 4th servos (made the right decision for a change). I decided to rebuild my first transmission, and it worked (for a while). This time, based on symptoms and visual fluid inspection, FLT suggests looking at the input sprag & converter as culprits. I found a piece of metal in the pan, and shavings floating in the fluid. Am I having fun yet? No... just disappointed at all the crap I have to go through just to enjoy a hybrid truck that's been in the family for 21 years. It'll get done one day. Now, it's back on jackstands until I can afford time & money to tear at it again.
BTW... I never bought an FLT trans. I just painted my first transmission to look like one. Also... FYI... FLT's not painting their transmissions anymore. Vince says they're going with the "virgin" look, and just blasting them clean. Mentioned that it was too much trouble in the shop with paint over-spray.
