I have washed the motor on every vehical i have owned, with no problems. I like to use Castrol Tough Task Degreaser. But it will miscolor some of the aluminum. DO NOT!!!! use on polished aluminum wheels, that was a 6 hour mistake

when i detail vehicles i use armor all tire foam. spray it on with the engine still dry. very liberal coat. then power wash off. will give your e.c. a shine but not too shiny where it is filthy after 3 miles.

i know this is an old post but oh well

i never use any type of tire shine under my hood b/c it collects dirt. i just wash with soap an water, and like Illy said don't do it while its hot.

armor-all is bad stuff it dry rots tires

when ever i have used it for a long period of time, it has made my tires start to crack along the side wall and it would leave a nasty brown film over the tire after the shine went away

I do have a problem with the brown film on mine too but I wash it every weekend so it stays pretty clean.
