Sounds like the shaft broke. When you take it off see if you can pull the shaft out. My boss broke his plowing. He was stuck and trying to get out spinning like a bastard. When he got out noticed no power steering. high RPM and stress kills them.

There might be trash in the rest of the system causing the failures. I think there is a filter you can get for the PS system.
