Thread: Joe Gibbs or Silverado SS

  1. #1
Hey guys whats going on. Im going to be in the market for a new truck soon (around June/July) and i was just trying to get some imput on what you guys t hought about a coupple of trucks. I currently have a 98 silverado z71 with some slite mods that i am going to be keeping as a winter truck and i also have a 56 chevy pickup with a built 350 SBC and a 4 speed. Im looking for an everyday summer driver with good power stock but something i can improve uppon. Ive been inlove with a SCSB Joe gibbs silverado's since the first time i saw one. Id really like a supercharged 5.3 but i donno if i can pass up that 4.8with a 5 speed. I was wondering how much more power the 5.3 with make with a supercharger then the 4.8 (same pully size) and if it is worth it to get the 4.8 because of the 5 speed. I also love the silverado ss's but from what ive heard they are kinda bulky and slow stock. Would it be cheeper to get a silverado ss and have the dealer put a supercharger on it or to just order a joe gibbs? Sorry for the long post. Just looking for some oppinions.

    Thanks

You can improve on both things pretty easily. I have always had a soft spot for the JG's as well so I would most likely say that because it seems for the money you could put into the JG's vs. the money into the SS, your times would go down further with the JG rather the SS. Both trucks are bad but I would say the JG.

JG, I've changed my mind lately especially since you pay less on insurance. The SS doesn't impress compared to all the other trucks on here as far as $ spent/ performance ratio. its a nice truck if u have the money and i've seen some nice one's but depends what ur looking for. check out Danny's(sprayed99's) gibbs, it's above any ss ive ever seen except maybe one(scorpioss). and there is one more on here i like i forgot the name of the guy tho.

My vote is the 2WD SS (or VHO) - the JG is a stylish truck, I like it a lot and I would seriously consider one *if* it had more motor; you will not see a JG truck with a 6.0l motor. I think the 2WD SS is the best truck as far as a platform for potential performance, and the mileage on my '03 AWD SS is better (&#33 than my buddies '05 ext-cab GMC w/ 5.3L. Yes the SS tips the scales at 5100-lbs (as does any other 2WD ext-cab Chevy including the JG) but the SS is certainly no slower than any other ext-cab Chevy product. Market right now on good used SS trucks are low-to-mid $20's, and with smart shopping you can get a Radix on the truck for right at $5-grand. Add converter, shift kit, headers, cat back, CAI, tuning, injectors, etc and we are talking low-to-mid 12's... with smart shopping that can realistically be achieved for low-$30's. What would the costs be to do the same with the JG, I don't know I'm asking seriously - but even though the JG is lighter you might find that the costs are not very different to achieve similar performance. Or maybe I'm wrong, but this is the direction I would approach the decision from.

Ultimately your choice will depend on how much utility you want from your truck, or how much performance you want. To me, a regular cab truck is not enough utility (I need more interior room than a single bench seat). And I don't care how sexy a vehicle looks 4.8l is not enough motor for me even with a blower and 5spd. OTOH if you are also going to swap in a LQ4/LQ9 into a reg-cab then that could be a really fun ride. Again just thinking out loud here...

Another fine truck - the GMC Denali's with LQ4? Just throwing it out there.

You have a few months, so use a bit of patience - don't feel like you've got to buy a truck *tomorrow*. Instead just keep watching for 'the right one' and you will see one come along every couple months.

YES!! 2wd SS or VHO! Its simple. If you get a VHO you wont have the high of an insurance payment.

I'd get the JG 4.8/5speed then swap it out for something with more L's.
