If all else fails just upgrade the brakes and you can have discs all the way around anyway. Plus a little peace of mind that you have that extra stopping power never hurts either.

i had 4 wheel disc on the 04, then disc/drums on the 05 and 06. i think that the rear drums brake better than the 4 wheel disc. but i also think the General did it to save a couple of $$$
The issue was with the e brake. After a while, it would just go to the floor and not hold. G.M. came out with a retaining clip that held the e brake shoes in place better, but changed anyway.

So when was the change over year they went to rear drums? 2005?
I test drove an 05 RCSB 4.8/5 speed today and forgot to see if it had drum or disk. It stopped fine either way, and ive worked on quit a few trucks replacing the ebrake shoe and trying to get it to hold better with very little success.
There are alot of suburbans and tahoes that the ebrake doesnt hold at all, just goes to the floor and nothing, and there is no room to adjust the cables.
Mines a 2000, and my ebrake does not hold. The backing plate the supports the cable to clamp them is rusted through. I will have to get a picture to show you guys. Really i have an ebrake that barely holds. And I believe gm did it to save money too.
Plain and simple the ebrake on the rear disk suks ass and if u ever have emergency u r swarewed... Thats why they went back to rear alot of the manual trans truck with rear disk had alot of recalls cus the ebrake wont hold. O yea mine wont hold good thing its an auto trans.... I even had the e brake cable fail also..
yes i had a 01 silverado with the discs and rear e brake....its rusts through and no longer holds which caused the ebrake to wear the rotor down with out it being engaged...

only one has worked. but im my 98 Cheyenne it works fine now. for some reason when it was new it would stick and it burnt up so the dealer ship fixed and replaced. other then that i think the drum works better for e brakes.
i also herd that they did it because they were having to many complaints about nose, dust and when they would go in mud the brakes would lock up. that was from covert chevy in hutto back in 05 when i was looking at the z71.
