Just addressing the GMS wires...

First, for a stock ignition system no after-market "spiral wire" conductors will add any power when compared to new OE carbon conductor wires, period. Carbon conductor wires do break down over time, so replacing them w/ well made after-market spiral wound conductors makes sense. Good ones basically last forever and indefinitely provide EMI/RFI suppression for street driven applications.

    - Stepping on soapbox...

The "specifications" for these wires on the GMS web site is pure marketing hype. I'm sure they're decent wires, for $200 they better be To their credit, they don't make any claims of HP gain.

I got some free time on my hands this evening, sooooooo can't resist to just make a point or two about a couple marketing buzz terms they use.

The first is "Near “0” ohm resistance". Resistance of what? Translation - Resistance per foot of a reference DC passing through the entire length of the fine wire used for the spiral conductor winding.

Your probably saying, "Okay Slamma, so what?". Well, an ignition coil is nothing more than a pulse type transformer potentially delivering tens of thousands of volts to the conductors. Which is really cool!

Does this massive amount of pulsating current "flow" through the entire length of the spiral wound conductor wire to the spark plug

Hell no. It obeys laws of electricity and travels in a magnetic field surrounding the windings by way of the skin effect. Carbon conductor and even solid wires basically work the same. Bottom line, claims of "low" or "near 0 ohm" resistance mean squat.

Oh, and how about that "Our wires increase power to the spark plug up to 25% over stock" claim. Whoptee freakin' doo.

Imagine if you will a light bulb socket wired to handle 10,000 watts, now screw in a 50 watt bulb. Does it use anymore than 50 watts? Of course not.

Okay, now think of your spark plug as the light bulb where the spark plug gap is like the element. How much energy is consumed when the spark jumps the gap? Just the amount that's needed of course. So if an OE carbon conductor can produce a spark across the gap, what does a 25% power increase buy you? Diddly shit, that's what

Advertising statements like these prove that engineers and scientists don't approve marketing material, ad execs do. Sorry if i insulted any ad execs out there, but could care less because it's the truth. It also means that some (most?) after-market "performance" vendors will say just about anything when marketing their products. I work in the computer industry and it's exactly the same .

    ...Now stepping off soapbox -

Hey, i finally applied my degree in physics to something useful: Helping to make Nelson Country a better place

And BTW, no, i don't wear a white lab coat or have a pocket protector

Both of my neighbors are Electrical Engineers. I always have to point out to them:

Thanks for the info! That was good information.

Yeah, Geek here also for sure. I'm more of a rough around the edges geek type, but can't escape it.

Glad to provide some helpful info. Didn't want to go on a big rant, but the kind of marketing crap like GMS employs just gets under my skin. I'm no expert when it comes to car mechanics, but the physics of electricity is one subject i can handle
