Oil Pressure?

ok i have a co-worker that has a 97-98 cheyenne with a 305...he says at idle and just starting off his oil pressure guage is at or near 0 and the check engine light flashes(he hasnt taken it to get it scanned yet)...once into 2nd and at freeway speeds it shows 40....

yes i told him to check oil level and to get it scanned but anyone have an idea what is happening...low oil/ pump about to go out?

Probably just the sender but use a manual gauge to make sure.
