Adjusting shift lever on 1996 gmc

After installing 03/auto trans in place of 5.0/auto in my 1996 GMC Sierra, the shifter works in all gears but doesn't go into park all the way. Where's the adjustment? The book refers to the "body -core adjustment on the transmission selector shaft"?

Which cable holder did you use the one off the old tranny or new tranny?

I used the new one. I noticed it was turned the other way from the 03 but it really doesn't look like its in a bind or anything. I just thought there was a way to adjust out or in with the cable.

Mine would not fit with the old bracket it was alittle too short and I was wondering if it might be causing some problems. Just a thought...

Tough answer from a tough question. There is a place about half way between the column and the trans where the adjustment can be made (depending on the cable and the application) but we need to know more about what is happening here.

OK bump for this question I realized today I am having the same problem with mine. With the transmission gear select in park and the column in park the shift lever is about 3/8 to 1/2 inch shy of hooking up... I can supply pic and whatever information need.

If it has the NBS cable or the OBS cable has the same adjuster as the NBS cable it should be as simple as pulling the retainer on the adjuster back then popping the clip up. Get rid of the slack or extra tension then put the clip back down and release the retainer (it's spring loaded). It's supposed to be done in P but sometimes it's easier in N.

Look under the floor in the driver's seat area for the adjuster.

So you are telling me to put the tranny in neutral and put the gear select in park and with the cable attached pull some sort of retainer on the adjuster and let it pull some cable them put the clip back in? This adjuster is under the carpet so I am going to have to pull the seats right.

    No.

The procedure has you do the adjustment with both in P but sometimes it easier in N.

The adjuster (if it's there) is under the TRUCK near where the driver's seat is, not under the carpet.

There's a ring around the adjuster that has a purple (usually) spring...pull back on the ring against the spring. Doing so will uncover a horseshoe shaped clip that can be popped up. That will allow adjustment between the two halves of the cable. When the adjustment is OK, push the clip back down then release the spring loaded ring.

Look under there. If you have it, you'll see what I mean. If you don't, it doesn't matter anyway.

Don't think I have any thing like that unless it it behind the grommet where it comes out of the floorboard... What's the next route or is there one.
