transfercase shifter motor

so I go to replace my transfercase shifter motor or my 04 Tahoe with and I cant get the new or old motor to line up with the teeth on the transfercase what the hell am I missing

the new unit is probably is neutral. The Tahoe is probably in 2wd. Plug the new unit into the wire harness- turn the key forward and push the 2wd button. That should align the gears.
