    Converter and gear questions

My 06 silverado currently has a 370 with 823 heads and 234/246 cam and will soon have plenty of nitrous sprayed to it. I have 4.56 gears and a pi vigilante converter that started as a 3200 but was re-stalled to 5000. The vigilante doesn't perform well and drivability is shitty. Have to keep my foot on the gas all the time just to back up. Previous owner said it started doing that after he had the converter re-stalled.

I called yank and he told me he'd go with a 3600 stall for nitrous and also told me that I should switch my gears to 3.73 or 4.10. Going backwards on gears makes no sense to me, especially for a 4500 pound truck. 3.73's wouldn't get this thing out of the hole worth shit I would think.

Chris at Circle D recommended a triple disk and lock it up down the track. What are your thoughts on lock up at wot?

I'd like to hear your thoughts on gears and converter options. What do you think would work best for me?

well it all depends on what the truck is mostly used for man. you didnt mention that. sounds like the previous owner used it at the track mostly. either that on he enjoyed feeding the pump green paper.... aftermarket heads, cam, gears, and massive stall = WORTHLESS street manners which is why you have to keep your foot in it to get the truck to do anything.

sounds like you want to drive on the street. if your not towing, 3200 should be good. if you want MPG, go for 3.73 if you dont care, 4.10 is obviously better for take off. up to you. i have 3.73 with a 2800 stall and a LQ9 and im extrememly happy with the performance. but i drive it alot and need to tow a boat which is why i kept stock gears and max 2800 stall. i can even tell i have to give it more gas with the 2800 vs stock TC.

so like i said man, it all depends on what the truck is used for and how much money you have for gas.... lol
Like Tumbler in "Gone in 60" I'll drive anything with wheels or without

Main goal is balls to the wall track performance on the bottle. This truck isn't my dd and only gets driven for fun so gas cost is no issue. I was just wondering if his suggestions for converter and gear were anywhere close to correct for track performance. I'm kind of a newb to converter and gear selection so just trying to learn what works for other guys.

i used to run 4:88 gears and a 4500 stall never a issue on the track or street driving, honestly i miss the setup this was with a stock 6.0 shortblock, and went great with a 408.

either something is wrong with the converter you have or maybe a tuning issue. a dyno will help you choose your converter due to peak torque once this is achieved that dude name Chris @ circle D will fix ya up even with the amount of nitrous you wanna spray. you running a 80E trans ?
    Simple: 408 on steroids!
    single digits coming soon!

I was hoping you'd chime in. I do have a "built" 80e. I bought the truck built for a nitrous setup, just no nitrous yet. What do you think of lock up at wot? Would it help, hurt, or just break stuff?

personally i liked locking up the converter mine was violent when locked at WOT, i used to run a triple disc vig.4 k i had Chris at circle D rework it. Then overtime it was time to make more adjustment, so i purchased a converter from him, it was the best i ever used, but i was running a 60E which held up great for the punishment it took. ( with the 80E and the first gear i'd keep the 4:56 get the converter redone and go from there, Chris gave me alot of input with his knowledge he worked with me until we had the converter locked down for the setup. the converter ended up being a 45-4800 with a 2b ( i think pump ) since i was going to spray a large amount of nitrous!

    answer your questions:?

    1. would it help to lock up ? > that's 50/50 i personally felt it did
    2. break stuff ? hmmm a well built torque converter will live ( i ran Chris converter for a very long time )

Was that 45-4800 converter in the 80e or were you still on a 60e?
