This is a repost from LS1tech.com:

Just a heads up for anyone who might be putting a Gen III engine in an OBS (1988-1998) GM pickup, you can use the motor mount adapter plate plans that are floating around the internet (sorry, this is not very descriptive) along with your stock mounts and some light modifications. The adapter plates have the 4-bolt pattern to mount to the new engine and the 3 bolt pattern to mount to your SBC motor mounts superimposed on each other. This is what my adapter plates look like before painting:

My SBC motor mounts had a raised area in the center of them that had to be removed to fit flat onto the mount adapter plates. I used an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to hack this raised portion off. I then bolted the adapter plates to the new engine and the SBC mounts to the adapter plates using nuts on the back of the adapters to secure the SBC mounts. This required some very minor clearancing on the webbing that reinforces the motor mount point on the engine block, so threading the holes in the adapter plates would have been a better idea. Anyway, here is a picture of the mounts installed:

That is looking at the passenger side mount from the back of the engine. The mounts place the back of the engine further forward than with the old SBC. This turns out to be a good thing for me for two reasons- it gives me more room to tighten the engine to trans bolts, and it allows me to use my stock driveshafts since I am also putting in a longer 4L80e transmission with this engine. The center of gravity will be moved forward a little bit, but hey, it's a pickup and the weight distribution is horrible in the first place. Here's what the engine looks like sitting in place:

Everything seems to be fitting just fine so far. The exhaust on the drivers side might be a little tricky, one of the studs is very close to the frame and might have to be cut down a little to fit a nut on there. We'll see...

Looking good so far PSWired!!! I think I'm a little ahead of ya on the install process on my 89 install. I got everything in and am just finishing up the wiring. We are having to replace everything that was 89 with new 2004 stuff ( rad, condenser, ect... ) all our old stuff was junk. Yea the data bus #2 had me scratching my head too I had to wire in the old sending units and find places on the new motor for them. I haven't had a chance to update my website in about a week too much going on. I'm ready to fire this thing off soon. Tranny lines are dogging me now and the A/C is going to be interesting cuz we've kept all the 2004 compressor, lines and such.... intigration, intigration, intigration.... Keep up the good work ... later.

Cool, do you have a 4L80e too? I got the cooler line adapter kit from PATC that allows me to put barb fittings on the transmission side, and then got trans cooler fittings to put in the radiator to get barb fittings there too. Then I'm using flex transmission cooler hose in between. I am going to try to run the lines through the frame if there are holes in the front so that they stay away from the exhaust heat. Are you retaining your cruise control? What are you doing to get a 2000 PPM, 4000 PPM, and 128k PPM VSS output for the cluster, cruise, and ABS respectively? What kind of cooling fans are you using?

pswired, no mine is 2wd and it has a 4L60E in it. Yea on the tranny cooler lines I was going to run them up through the frame too all the way up but on the 2wd's they would run right through the coil spring on the pass side which wouldn't be cool. So I'm going to bring them up past the tranny dipstick and over to the inner fender and up that way. On the cruise control yes I am retaining it my 04 motor has fly by wire ( electronic pedal ) so it's not hard to incorporate it all I have to do is wire the old switch into the new control box. Thankfully GM still uses the same system and even the same color wires except one.. lol. On the VSS output I haven't crossed that issue yet. The 04 has a single wire output that goes to the 04 cluster for the speedo but my 89 has a two wire system for the speedo. I think one is a ground or low reference but not sure. I'm going to get it fired up and running before I concern myself with the speedo ( who needs it ?? ) This truck is only equipped with rear ABS and I don't think it has worked in years so no big loss there. I am using all the cooling system from the 04. The rad, shroud, fan clutch, condenser, tranny cooler, p/s cooler..... basically if it was unboltable we took it out of the 04 truck. We stripped that sucker!!! Anyway check out my site I got a lot a pics on there too. If I cure the VSS issue before you get it I'll post it up for ya. Later, Brian
