    Exclamation 97' Camaro Start Problems

A buddy of mine has a 97 Camaro with an LT4 350 in it, and it ran fine yesterday but today it just won't crank. It turns over really fast but it won't even try to start. He is gettin spark, and i'm not sure if he's gettin enough fuel but when he tries to crank it, i can smell it. Any suggestions?

lt4 is what he means. lt1 camaro with lt4 heads and intake. are you sure it is firing at the plug and not just going into the opti? if the waterpump starts leaking it will run into the opti and do just like you are describing but there is no fire at the plugs.

That's possible, but I've never heard of them going from fine to not working in one day. Usually the car will start having a miss that gets progressively worse when the opti goes out.

The fuel pump is a common issue with these cars. Can you hear the pump prime when you turn the key to "run"? If so, throw a fuel pressure gauge on it to see if you're getting fuel to the injectors.

if water gets in the opti it goes from working to dead as soon as the water gets in there. and the weep hole for the water pump is directly over the opti, great place for the opti. it's very common to have to replace the opti when changing the waterpump unless all water is removed from the block to keep it from getting into the opti.

you should hear the pump when you switch the car on, but get someone to take the gas cap off and listen when you switch the key on. or check the schrader valve on the fuel rail by switching the car on and press the valve core in, make sure you are not in front of it when you press the valve core!!!

Opti-crap possibly. There is also a fail-prone wire harness to the OS. It's like 4 or 5 wires and maybe a foot long and is $200 from GM.

If I remember right that pigtail (runs from a connection near the TB down to the opti) was only like $25 when I swapped a '94 LT1 into a '95 Z28 a few years back.

But I would still double check that the pump whines when the key is turned to run, and then check the fuel pressure at the rail... My dad tought me to check the simple stuff first.
