    New 20's New Problems

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has had this problem or heard of it? I put some new rims I bought from a friend. Had them checked out and they are good to go not out of round and balanced. Now when I drive everything is smooth (i think, dont know if vibrations are from the road or from the wheels) when I hit the brake it feels like my truck is going to rattle apart. I happens at higher speeds slowing down gradualy from 50mph to 30mph. If it hit the brakes faster I feel a slight pulsation in the pedal and in the seat.
Took the truck back had em make sure it was balanced properly and they let me watch while they did it. Everything looked good but then still vibrating while braking. I figured ok rotors or some kind of clearance issue. I pulled em off checked everything and still... everything looks good, no rubbing I can see. I go to get the rotors checked out and the guy tells me (he never looks at the rotors) the offset isnt right for the truck he sees it all the time. I dont know what the offset is on a stock silverado?

The original wheels and tires.... 05 silverado 1500 CC 245/70R17 I think they are 7.5" wide I dont know the offset. The rims I put on are 20 x 8.5 +14mm offset with 275/45R20

What do you guys think? I dont know about offsets and backspacing?

warped rotors? I'd have em cut just to check.

You can rotate tires, to MAKE SURE they are balanced.

Offset shouldn't matter on any kind of vibrations. Mine stick out a bit, never had a problem. If it just started with wheels, unlikely its tie-rods/ball-joints/wheel-bearings...but worth checking just to be safe.

This sounds crazy, but there are little clips that go on the lugs of the rear brake rotors. Take them off. They are extremely tiny, but they make a big difference in wheel vibration.

I've heard the exact same story as you more than 20 times and just about every time, removing them solved the problem.

+ 1 i had the same problem removed the clips. most of the time this will happen with a warped rotor though. as well as the tie rods. i've always had alignment done when replacing tires or wheels on the front to be on the safe side.

+1 on the clips. Seems many people do not realize they need to be removed. Causes your wheels to be unevenly torqued, which can cause rotor warpage. Another thing overlooked is removing any corrosion buildup from the rotor/flange where the wheel mounts.

To answer your question about the 8.5 wide with +14 offset, that setup is just fine for your GM truck. It will not cause any problems.

Your problem is being caused by warped rotors.

Warped rotors and aftermarket wheels hate those clips.

The factory wheels have recesses for those clips, they put them on to hold everything together during assembly.

If you've had it to a tire shop, more then once, I HOPE they would have taken them off. If not, it's time to find a new shop.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yea its been 2 trips to the tire shop and pretty much everytime I go to them theres always somthing. Thats the last time, I dont care if I have to drive 30 miles. The brake shop guys lol, welp I wasnt sure of the stock offset and since i didnt have the facts I nodded and said bye. I think the rotors and maybe the clips sounds like a possibility. I have never actualy looked for the clips. They are on the rear rotor at the base of the lugs? Thanks for the help guys
