Does anybody know anything about tilt steering wheels?

I hop in the 'Ho this afternoon and the tilt lever moves but the wheel is locked up. It's a 2000 if that makes a difference. I removed the lower cover to see if I could find something that had come unhooked. There are two slightly curved metal bars with notches cut in them. I assume the notches catch to hold the wheel and release to let it move. One I can push up the other is solid. I can see nothing that looks broken or like it has come undone. I afraid the whole assembly will need to be taken apart or replaced. Any ideas?

Was the steering wheel locked? I would try starting it and turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock and then try adjusting it. From there, I wouldn't have a clue. Just be careful about the steering wheel's clock spring and the airbags...

Thanks. Nope, it wasn't locked, at least not like when you can't turn it, I drove home with it in the upright position but I don't remember if I ever turned it from lock to lock, I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Yeah, while I was poking around under there I got thinking I wouldn't want to screw up the air bag. That would suck big time.

Dude your not gonna mess up the air bag as long as you dont unplug it (well even then just plug it back in) ive had my entire truck stipped to the fire wall and everything is fine so you dont need that to worry about it wont accidentally go off or anything so try pushin the steering wheel all the way up then pull the release lever that will usually work when the steering wheel locks in the upright position if not that then those metal bars you were pushing on will probably be the prob ill take a look at mine and see and post you an answer. but the airbag should be that last of your worries.
