OK, to some of you guys this may be stupid, but remember my specialty is paint and body work, not so much tranny and stuff. Anyway. Where are you gears? Are they all in the rearend? So when you upgrade your gears is the only thing you have to change in the rear end? Or is there stuff in the tranny too? Sorry for the Stupidity.

When you see someone talking about a gear swap, they are talking about changing the ring and pinion gears that are inside the rear end.

so you could go from say 3.73s to 4.10s just by messing with the rearend.

I just noticed that you were AWD. The answer is "yes" for a 4x2 but on a AWD or 4x4 the gears have to be changed in the front differential also.

If that's the case, yes he just needs a set of rear gears and to have them installed but that is a great time to upgrade to a aftermarket differential, such as a Eaton or Detroit Truetrac. There would be no additional labor, only the cost of the unit.

The reason that I mention that is that I had mine re-geared and used the stock G80 locker. About 6 months later I destroyed the G80. When it came apart, it damaged my new gears. I had to pay to have new gears and a new carrier/posi unit installed for a second time.

A new set of gears and a install kit should be $200-250. The going rate around here for an install is $250-300. A detroit Truetrac would add $375-400 to the total cost.
