I'm new I have a 1990 GMC short wheel base step side that I'm up in the air about getting an LT1 or an LS1 to drop in it. Any help would be great.

IMO, Ls1 or 6.0 is the way to go. They are easier to work on and get power out of.
We have 1 of 2 projects started along the same lines. We almost have the motor together to put in an '81, and after that, plan on doing the 6.0 in a '92 rcss.
Its a little more for the GENIII motors, but worth it to me.

My first choice is the LS6 since it's pure power right out of the box. My last choice is the low performance LQ4. The September issue of PHR had an LS1 turboed and pushing 1138 hp at 15 lbs of boost. Have to remember that even during a apples to apples comparison, if the 6.0 made the same HP it still is 100 lbs heavier and slows you down due to the weight. The LS2 is 6.0L, 400+hp right out of the crate and 100 lbs lighter than the LQs. They don't build top fuel dragster blocks out of cast iron now do they. Any time you add weight to a vehicle you slow it down. Just like the 4L80e trans, it's bullet-proof but the weight will kill your 60 ft times unless the guy next to you blows his 4l60e to pieces.

I guess my did not show my sarcastic synacism that I wanted. I would love to have more horses out of the box and lighter but I got the best bang for my buck on a better platform than the light duty 1500.

I guess you didn't see that the 5.3 or 4.8 weren't on my list of engines. I only started my opinions due to the stock engine hp ratings vs how heavy the engine burden will be on the vehicle. LS6/405/alum, LS1/350/alum, LS2/385/alum, LQ4/325/cast, LQ9/345/cast. I like the LS1/LS2/LS6 because it's just as cheap to buy a brand new block as it is to have one remachined for rebuild not to mention you can carry one around the shop in your bare hands without having to visit the local chiropractor the next day. I don't have anything against the 6.0L engines other than they are fat pigs.
