03+ cluster in an obs swap?

Not sure if this would be the right subforum but here goes.
I think I'll be far enough in my truck to where I will be building my interior this summer and while it's winter still I want to start stocking up on parts.
I was going to run classic instruments gauges but the ones I like are upwards of $700 and I can't get matching air pressure gauges.

I started looking into the 03-07 style gauge clusters and I think I like the escalade style and some of the trailblazer/envoy gauges.
My question is how much of the cluster is controlled by the bcm?

By looking at pinouts and diagrams I think most of the gauges will work right off the pcm via serial data but I'm not sure if the cluster has to have a bcm to function (90 model truck so that's not happening)
Obviously the bcm signals to the cluster I won't need since my truck doesn't have air bags, abs etc.
I'm just wondering if the cluster will work "stand alone" with just power ground and pcm signals.

Any help is appreciated since I can probably do a nice cluster for about half of the costs of all new gauges

I can wire some other essential signals like turn signals and brake lights etc.
I basically just want the gauges to work and would like the p-r-n-d indicator to function.
I have a 5.3 with a 03 pcm and newer 4l60e with the correct plugs.
