Thread: 4.8 weak!

    4.8 weak!

i just recently bought a 2003 silverado ext cab with a 4.8. It has 180k on it now and still runs fine. The truck seems REALLY sluggish at take off. It does feel more powerful higher in the rpm range. i am guessing this is just a characteristic of the 4.8. i would like to get more power down low in the rpm range. My question is should i put a cam in the old 4.8 or swap the motor over to something with more cubes. This will be a build on a budget.

A cam in a 4.8 will generally lose more bottom end then it will gain as far as seat of the pants goes. The best thing mod wise for it will be a stall. You will skip the sluggish take off and get right into the upper power range. A 5.3 Or of course a 6.0 will have more torque than the 4.8 so it will help. Important factor is the gears. I suspect 3.23 or 3.42s when considering the sluggish take off. Especially with the 4.8 4.10s would be dramatically better. My wish list for your build would look something like this:
    1) tune/boltons
    2) stall
    3) gears
    4) motor swap
    5) cam swap

If you looked hard enough, and dont give up, you could find a 5.3 or even a 6l for cheap. I bought my roll over from a body shop for $300 plus tow bill

how long do you think the ol' 4.8 will last with 180k on it and just now starting to mod it?

Other than springs Rockerarm bearings and pushrods not a whole lot that wears out on these motors. The bottom end goes to 300k without blinking in many cases.

Gears, stall, bolt ons like CAI, LTs, then cam and then turbos. Yup 2. I got a 4.8 it suks down low but with, 4.10s 3200 stall and TSP 220 id does pretty good on takeoff. It will burn through 80% of 1st gear. Mine does.

    4.8, TSP 220, 6L90 swap, 3400 Stall, 4.10s w/30" drag radial and T76 @ 16lbs.
