    LS1 hot cam help

    Hey guys and gals I'm new here.Well I need some help with my new cam. I installed a ls1 hot cam in my truck. The truck is a 06 GMC with a 5.3 in it. It has 3.73s, K&N cia, Pacesetter shorty headders, stock Y-pipe, and a 3 inch cat back with a cut out and 40 series Flowmaster that exits in the stock location. I use a Diablo sport tuner. Before the cam swap The truck had run a best time of 15.74@ 87 m.p.h. with a 2.46 60ft. with out wheel spin. I installed the cam on Friday the 15th . I did not use the LS6 springs. The stockers are still in there. I went to the track to tune the truck. The motor revs fast but feel lazy below 3500. After that if feels like it pulls hard.Well the times say everything. 16.38@ 85 mph.It does not valve float, its not pinging, its not running lean or rich. The knock retard is not pulling timing according to my real time data on the diablo sport. What gives? I know I should put the springs in. Do I need shorter push rods? Maybe the valves arn't seating all the way. Is the tune crap? Just need some advice. Thanks.

    I just installed one this winter in my truck and took it to the track only to run 2 tenths quicker...but my tune was messed up. I'd say ditch the predator and go with a mail order tune from nelson performance. I would suggest putting the LS6 springs in, they came with the kit because the stockers won't hold up.

    where did you hear this? i've never heard that.

    Yeah I called Nelson. I'm gonna get a tune. Can I expect big improvements?Anyone have before and after track times?

    Some have seen a full second of the 1/4 I know my Nelson tune helped alot. They help outrun lightnings.

    If you don't mind a lumpy idle, the Hot Cam is a good choice for your truck. It should add about 40 HP to a 5.3, which should get you near 15.0 in the quarter (assuming a 4800-5000 pound race weight and proper tune).

    But, if that's your truck in your avatar, you should already be in the low 15's. You seem to be down on power. I suspect your current tune is holding you back. If that's the case, a Nelson tune with the Hot Cam could get you into the mid to upper 14's.

    You also need to start thinking about a high-stall converter - something in the 2800-3200 RPM range. Your 60 ft time is way too high. A good converter will knock off an easy 3-4 tenths.

    Time for a converter and better tune.

    I was thinking a 3000 stall. That is my truck in the avatar. It goes 15.70s at 4200ft of elevation with the stock cam. It weighs 4690 with me in it and a 1/4 tank of gas. When I was in Oaklahoma at 1000 ft it went 14.97 @ 90 m.p.h. with a CIA, sorty headders, 3 in cat back and a Hypertec programer.When I came back to El Paso at 4200ft it went 15.99 once. It normaly ran 16.00-16.10. I went to a diablo sport and it went consistant 15.70s. I was hoping the cam would give me at least 3 tenths.

    You need some Lts, I lost hp when I had my cam installed, Put on some lts and gained about 50hp, But you will need a stall convtr with that cam.
