    Annonying noise and trans leak?

so lately there has been this GAWD AWFUL squeeking noise that has been comin from my truck, i know it's not the engine so it has to be something with the drivetrain. anyways, i got underneath and gave it a good lookover, and i discovered that was oil leaking from where the driveshaft and trans connect. you can see in the pics that oil has been slung all around. you can see a black spot on the exhaust pipe and burnt off.

Looks like the U-joint has crapped out. Replace the U-joint innards.

Yes. The u-joint is in question--not the real seal on the tranny (from what I can see in the pics). The u-joint seals have failed and is slinging grease.

ok, i got under there and two of the four shafts on the u-joint had a little plastic seal/ring. i tinkered with those a little bit and snapped em back in place. the squeaking stopped....for now. how hard is it to swap the Us out??

Maybe the snap rings came unseated???

Make sure to get your grease gun out, find the grease zerk, and fill it back up. Make sure to clean where the grease has thrown itself on the undercarriage so that in a few days you can crawl under there to see if the problem still exists.

Removing the U-joints isn't that tough. I would first drain the tranny fluid so when you take the driveshaft out the fluid doesn't go all over your face. It would be funny, but trying to save you the embarrassment.

Then remove the DS from the tranny. Remove clips. Take a torch and heat up the female ends of the U-joint for about 10 secs. Once you think the female ends are warm enough, take a hammer and punch and just hit them out. Installation goes the same: Heat up the female ends and punch in the new one.

if you have slung all the grease out of the joints then you will want to change them cause they will have gotten hot turning without grease and will eat the needle bearings up. the u-joints are not hard to change if you have a large vise or press to press them out, just have to be carefull to not damage the the new joint while reassembling it.

or you can just jack the rear of the truck up so that the fluid runs to the front of the tranny.
