Pontiac Bites the Dust - maybe

Looks like GM may final shut down the division Pontiac

Really long over due if you ask me.
The models are redundant and just add un-need overhead to the company.

Cadillac and other high-end brands have a place but,
Pontiac, GMC, Oldsmobile and Mercury needed to be done away with
    decades ago to cut cost.

Supposedly GM hasnt decided yet, but I think it would be a smart move
    personally.

Mercury is a ford product if I remember correctly. What GM will probably do is take the G8 and reman it as a chevy. They are just not going to have multiple of the same car in different names.
    Step 1. crus at it.
    Step 2. get a hammer.
    Step 3. torch it.

    Mercury is Ford's Pontiac.
GM would still make a car like the G8 - just sell it thru Chevy

There are just too many brands these days from foreign makers.
Back in the 60's Pontiac had its place to help diversify brand selection.

The market is overwhelmed with brand selection now though.

gotcha! I would be completely fine driving a car that nice with a bowtie on the front!

. . .understand about the doubling of brands to me it always seemed pointless to sell 2 or 3 of the exact same vehicle with just a different badge on the front. . .

When I was at Ford we didn't even stock Mercury it's dead in the water, and Pontiac was always considered the High Performance division. Maybe if they just stuck to that they might have carved a niche, but with just duplicate cars they need to go.

Mercury is F**d's Buick and Buick needs to die before Pontiac. Pontiac is the only division that has a car on a different platform than all the others and they're a lot different in form than the other divisions so I'd hardly say they have redundant models. It's Buick that has all Chevy and Cadillac platforms underneath and needs to be killed before the Poncho. Killing GMC would be a huge mistake....yeah they sell 1:4 or so compared to Chevy but many long time (old) GMC customers would buy a Dodge before they bought a Chevy. Yes, that's dumb and true.
