Thread: Fuel pump and tank question

Question Fuel pump and tank question

Hey everyone, I am currently working on a 5.3 swap into an 85 k10 short box and I am wondering if anyone one knows what fuel pump I need. I want to run an intank pump and I plan on using a gas tank for like a 90 k5 blazer so it would be a throttle body truck. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You!

I dont know the exact part number but in my friends K5 with a vortec 5.7 swap we used the tank and sending unit from a 91 K5 and the pump for a 1996 2 door 4x4 fullsize blazer/tahoe.

Put you a Walbro 255 in it and you'll be fine.

What gas tank are you running? Is it a throttle body tank?

No...I ran the original 1986 carb tanks. I used 1987 R/V series hanger/senders in them. They fit fine.

We were having issues with running carb tanks off road. When climbing a hill the fuel would not stay near the pump and it would run lean and die out. If this is a street truck then you shouldnt have too much of an issue with a carb tank.

1987 Tanks and TBI senders Dual Tanks!

Hey Guys I am in the process of swapping in a turbocharged LQ4/4l80e in my 1985 Silverado Short/wide and I have dual tanks. I will be using the 1987 only tanks because they have a sump box built in and I will use the 1987 TBI 3 outlet senders with a Walbro 255 high pressure pump in each of the tanks. The pumps will be wired to two separate relays hooked to the origonal tank switchover switch on the dash board, heck I can put a window switch for wide open throttle to trigger both pumps to come online!

From the sender units I will be using 1999 Corvette fuel filters (they have the fuel pressure regulators built in) so i can go to the one line fuel system. After the Corvette regulators will be an adapter to go from the Corvette quick connect to -6AN female to Aeromotive check valves, then to a -6an tee, then on to the fuel rail.

I wanted to simplify my return line syle fuel rail on my 02 Lq4 so I made it returnless with quickconnect to -6an fitting, then added a fuel pressure gauge/and adapter then a -6an cap.

The folks At the MPI Connection were very helpfull and the prices are right on the tanks and senders. 1-800-848-4850. The check valves were sourced from Summit along with all the other -6an stuff.

    Part numbers:
16 gallon fuel tank with sump GM11c left or right MPI
    LH TBI sender FG05M MPI
    RH TBI sender FG05N MPI
    Fuel Check Valves AEI-15106 SUMMIT
CONVERSION FROM CORVETTE FILTER TO -6AN FEMALE WERE SOURCED FROM Street and Performance.

I hope this helps someone else save some time figuring out a dual tank setup. I had the origonal 85 tanks with a rail mounted pump and dual switcher valve and a rats nest of hoses it worked ok till about half a tank then the pump would starve for fuel and it made all kinds of crappy noise. Starving for fuel is not so wise with a turocharged application. Guys with 73-87 truck are very lucky because the some 1987 trucks came with the TBI fuel injection and the tanks are a direct replacement.
