    Question 408 cam selection

Okay I tried to search, but I didn't find anything I liked.

I need a cam selection for my 408. I am going to run NA for a year or so, and then I can swap for a more suitable FI cam later.

EC 1/2 ton truck weighs 5,070 with me in it, 3.73 gears with 32" tires (305/50R20), stock stall. Daily driver. CR is 9.6 on the 408.

I don't need a rediculous lope, so I would like to keep the LSA around 114.

i like the MTI R1, it is a bad ass cam for stock cube ls1 cars, i've installed them and made well over 400rwhp cam only in f-bodies. it was originally designed for stroker motors (2000-2001 era) I think it would be a pretty good selection for a truck.

TSP recommended nothing bigger than 224/228 due to the stock stall & possible idle issues.

    Other input?

Idle isn't an issue. You've got a tune! I think Mean05 had like a 248/248 cam in his truck and it idled just fine. I've got the largest off the shelf Gen3 cam Comp markets and it idles fine. It's all in the tune.

if the tune is decent the idle will be a non issue. TSP is playing it safe which is what they should do. A 224/228 would be a BABY cam in a 408 and I guarantee you will want more. The LSx 396 in my old racecar was a 286/303 with way over .700" lift and with the right tune and backpressure hte idle sounded about like that of a cam only car, a little more throaty, but no more choppy or nasty sounding.

From all my research, I thought it was small too, but I am no cam specialist at all!

Call Erik Koenig at HKE, or Allan Futral, they are the two I trust for that kind of decision. Erik spec'd the cam in my race motor, Hans Feustel built it tho.

you can run my cam N/A or FI. 220/220 .581/.581 on a 115. It is a good cam Pulls mid to high end. If you already have a stall it will be perfect.
Foggy has the same cam. Get with Allen to make sure.

What ALL of you are forgetting is when you go to a large cam you have to up the idle. My 237/242 112 idled at 950+/- 50, that idle speed with a stock stall equals the cruise control effect. SC I dont know if you know what that is but basically any time you want to hold the truck still it is hard because as soon as you let off it wants to take off because the stock stall engages very low in the rpm band whereas with a larger converter you can get away with a large cam and not have any low speed issues because it doesnt engage till 2K or more. FYI, Im running a 226/224 112 in my 420 with a stock 80e stall(2500 brake stall speed) and that is going to net me an idle somewhere near 700 which will be fine with the looser 80e stall, stock 60e stalls are around 1800 if I remember right. Remember those speeds are brake stall speeds not the speed at which they start to engage. You have one of three choices, either buy a stall to throw in so you can run a larger cam and not have any adverse low speed driveability problems, keep the stock stall and run a smaller cam, runa big cam and do 20mph without your foot on the gas. If you keep the stock stall I would go with something like mine, if you put a 3K stall in it I would go with a mid 230s cam, anything larger and the damn thing bounces around too much while you are sitting in traffic and gets annoying after a while. Again I would talk to Richard@WCCH they build these motors all day long. Just my .02 SC take it for what its worth.

I've been in a few trucks with a 408 , 228/230 and they run great! You might want to consider at least a 2600yank for your setup.
