i think you'd be the first with the old school 4x4 idea...but there is plenty of help around here....and by chance i would bet you're another one from texas...just like the other of the 592 members.....florida has 4, cali id guess around 10, and the rest of the hooligans are in texass.

No actually Im from missouri. I have been wanting to build a stroker motor for my 76 shortbed but i love fuel injection. I have a 02 Trans am CE, so I know how the LS1 performs. Ive looked around some but havent been able to find any 4x4 old school LS1 conversions. I thought it would be neat to pop the hood on the old 76 and see a LS1. I also thought of a 8.1 out of a new style chevy also. I havent decided yet and am still reading up. I have a built 350 turbo and gear drive. I have a dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear with 4:56 gears and lockers at both. Its rolling on 39.5x15x16.5 swampers, so Im gonna need some power. Im just tired of the reliability of carburators, and every old 4x4 around here is the same. I WANT SOMETHING UNIQUE!!! Thanks guys, Aaron

What motor and tranny do you have stock?

I'd look into getting a 4L80E tranny that has a Transfercase on it already. Then just scoop up an LS1. You may have to get a 6.0L instead...basically an iron LS1

Yea I was wondering abou that.I have stock 70's drivetrain. Figured I would have to go with a stand alone set up to the 350 turbo. Maybe i could find a wrecked 3/4 or ton and get a complete 8.1 with tranny and transfer, wiring and ecm, the works. I love you Avatar Hitmanx! Where did you get that?

The 4L60E is like an electric TH350 w/ OD. The 4L80E is like an electronics TH400 w/ OD. From my memory a 700R4 (old non electric 4L60E) is the same length as a midshaft TH350 so that swap may be easier.

    I'd look for a 6.0, 4L80E w/ transfercase (electric or manual). It's a pretty HD setup.

Either way I think you will need to modify the tranny crossmember and get a new front driveshaft made.

My avatar is of Syndey Moon. I got someone to mail me a bunch of .gifs and it was in there. If you know how to convert shock wave files to .gif I can send you a few of those and you too can be in "the club"
