Sicne you truck is so heavy you may want to look at something in the 208 range IMO. Are you willing ot run a stall or not? Do you tow with it?

I might be willing to put a stall in it but I don't really want to. I don't do a lot of towing with it but I usualy pull my harley and sometimes my 90 RCSB.

If you're not planning on any serious mods and you want a stock idle, this cam is pretty good for all around power. What idle and power band are you looking for?

    99-214/220-115+2

Thunder Racing Custom "Old Man Truck" Camshaft - 214/220 .600/.525 115+2 LSA This is the perfect cam for someone looking for a stock range power band and stock sounding idle. Significant horsepower gains throughout the RPM range. No computer tuning required. Due to the fast ramp rate of this camshaft, the use of 1.8 rockers is not recommended.

    Hi,

I agree. The smallish cam - like 208 is still too small - even if you are towing a RCSB (as long as it has wheels and tires which will turn ).

I ran a stock TBI setup with an aluminum Edelbrock intake and Canfield 195cc cylinder heads with a 216/228@.50 and .454/.480 cam. On top of this, I upgraded from 1.5 to 1.6:1 Roller Rockers.

I had about 310rwlbtq (versus stock 210)with that setup, so with a newer style engine (mine was a 1993 model), you should be really good.

    Take care.

I don't care about the idle, I would love for it to have a lope. I was figuring on having a power band somewhere between 2500-6000 but figured in that range I would probably have to put a stall in it to make it work right. I am a 6 speed guy. I don't know jack about torque converters. I am going to have allen tune it for me but I want to wait until I change the cam. I am also going to change the rocker arms valve springs and push rods.

I have been there done that. I have had a big cam in my heavy truck with a 3K stall and it sucked. I had a comp 222/224 112lsa witha 3K stall and it pulled hard as hell up top but even with the 3K stall there was a gap down low. The guys recommending the 220 range cams probably havent ran a big cam in a heavy truck. Im guessing this is a DD and you do tow a bit and with those kind of cams when on OD and the TC locked you will be dropping down into 3rd all the time and uinlocking and locking the TC all the time. Talk to Allen he can set you up right. I still stand by my recommendation of a 208 210 range cam. The LSx engines are a totally different animal than the toher engines before it.

Hey - do what you'd like. I ran (and still run) the same 1993 Extended cab pickup (which I got in 1998) and had the 350 TBI I mentioned above - which was a daily driver until just this year (when I swapped the LS1 into it).

So, I've lived it....for years..... I did not change a thing about the factory 4L60E when I put that stuff in (which I started putting in back in 1999).

I dynoed it and had 225rwhp and 310rwlbtq. Not bad for a truck which started out with 190hp at the crank.

For me, if I had to go back to a 350 TBI? I'd only change the cylinder heads I chose - just because they didn't have a provision for an EGR.

Not downing you at all but the TBI engines are a totally different animal than the LSx family of motors. You owuld never dream of running a 242/248 112lsa cam on an old TBI engine but the f-body guys do it all the time. Just letting him know that a high teens cam is going to cutout ALOT of his bottom end and will be useless for towing.

Yeah, I was wondering when we'd work our way around to that point....flat tappet vs roller. Well, I had converted this over to roller when I changed it out.

Though there's alot of differences. I still stick with the recommendation, but I was also the guy they told not to stick that large of a cam into a TBI in the first place.

Unfortunately for the Denali's, other Chevy's and up to the 2000 Camaro Z28's I raced in my truck. It seems I was able to prove my point to them.

On the other hand, I didn't go with the cam so large with the LS1 I have now - mostly because of the possible need to fly-cut the pistons.

Good luck with the choice - if nothing else, I confused you more...but also gave you something to think about instead of going with the 'safe' choices.

    Happy
