Gear swap questions

Hey guys I got a 10 bolt rearend that has posi 2.72 and I have a set of 3.42 gears from a open dif. Questions are will the 3.42 work with my 2.72 carrier? And will the swap be noticeable? Thanks! FYI it's in a 84 truck

You will notice a dramatic difference with that big of a change. I am guessing you have a th400?

The carrier break is 2.56 and numerically lower and then 2.73 and numerically higher so you should not need a carrier
