    Checking my LM7

    Just got my LM7 today. Took a 1" socket, put it on the crank bolt, and began turning.
    It's turning really hard. Is this normal? I thought its supposed to turn relatively easy.
    Do you think I should take it back and get another engine? They told me the engine had around 50k miles on it. The oil drain plug didn't have any metal on it. I'm a newbie, and need help. Thanks.

    High compression would be harder to turn, take out spark plugs and try again

    I will thanks. One thing I forgot to mention, there isn't any oil in the engine. Did I just make a big mistake?

    How hard and easy is relative. I know my 6.2 is way harder to turn over by hand than a lower compression 5.3 or LQ4. PLEASE put oil in it before you turn it over. It's okay to do it without, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. There should be enough oil left in it to keep things lubed.

    I will put oil in it and give it a try. Hope I didn't break anything inside.

    Like I said, if there was enough oil left on things to keep it semi lubricated, it will be perfectly fine. People turn freshly assembled engines over by hand all the time. Those have assembly lube on them though. You can't turn it fast enough by hand to do much damage.

    Thanks. I understand. By the way, how much compression should I see if I try a compression test?

    You should see no more than a 15% difference between all cylinders. A wet and dry compression test give different readings.

    If it turns good without the spark plugs, and has good compression, passes a leakdown test, is there any reason to open up the bottom end and take a peek inside? The engine has 50k miles on it. Would it be a good idea to replace the front and rear oil seals?
