Does this engine need to go to the machine shop?

    2002 lq4 from a 2500hd

it looks like its been sitting outside for a few years and water worked its way in to some of the cylinders and sat there. do you think it needs to be honed out/rings replaced or what? how smooth do the cylinders need to be? anything else that should be checked on an engine like this?

the pics are from after me spending a good while cleaning the pistons and walls with degreaser and oven cleaner and removing carbon buildup.

I'd ship it to proheads.com and let them work on it for ya.

Let me reiterate this isnt my engine, its a friends who he bought from a salvage yard. He is trying to save as much money as possible and doesnt need or want anything more than a stock 6.0 with maybe a cam. Buying new pistons is not in the budget.

Ok well from what I can tell in the pictures the block needs decked and the cylinders need cleaned out. Check them for taper you might get away with a decent hone and new rings. And knock the ridge down.

If he can't save up any money to make it right, then just run it like that.

    lol ricky.
deff needs cleaning/hone/deck. its possible all the water jackets could have excessive rust. get it honed and new rings and bearings, any local machine shop should be able to do this no point in spending way to much money to ship it somewhere
