IMO i would have kept the box on there, Now its just getting hot air sucked in from the engine itself

i capped off the silencer on my intake on my 98 k2500, then i got a 3.5'' 90dg, drilled a hole for the IAT sensor and replace that crappy plastic elbow on mine, that cost me like 8 bucks at oreillys. and then i bought one of the stainless element spectre filters

i didnt notice any difference when i sealed mine off on my 97, its still a restrictive stock intake with a fram filter, the k&n filter did help me. they sell cold air intakes really cheap on ebay
