Some have built in bypass, some dont
Depends on which model you bought.

I wouldnt worry about it Maryland.

If lived Wisconsin where it can get to -20 below then I would worry about
    having a bypass.

the factory one is mounted with the inlet/outlet in the horizontal position. is there any advantage to mounting it with the inlet/outlet in the vertical position?

Yes, you have to make sure it doesn't get air locked.

so you would need to mount it vertically(like in the radiator) with the inlet side on bottom, and the outlet side on top.
