    8.1 problems

    I have a question about a 2001 8.1

when you get in the truck cold and take off it will all most die or sometimes compleatly die on ya. after it warms up it never misses a lick. just got off the phone with Gm and this truck wasent suppost to be affected
    any ideas?
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is directing the recall of 11,974 2001-model-year heavy duty pickups built by General Motors to fix faulty crankshaft position sensors, under NHTSA campaign ID number 07V521000.

Only Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 trucks with 8.1-liter Vortec V8 big block gasoline engines are impacted by the recall.

According to NHTSA's website, the crankshaft position sensor can operate intermittently or fail completely. If the sensor operates intermittently, the service engine light may illuminate and cause the vehicle to run rough or stall the engine. The engine can be restarted immediately or after a cool down period. If the sensor fails completely, the engine will not run."

Very common problem waaaaay before the recall came out. I've had 1-2 without the recall since it came out. That means over the years I have replaced the CKP sensor in all of the 8100's in Cooke County. If you have never done this job it takes a lot of contorsion and patience. I've got my own method. The sensor is like 6-8" long and goes down into the block behind the LH head under the cowl/firewall. The plastic gets brittle and if you're not careful, it will break off in the block.

You can do it if you have some mechanical skill, a lot of WD40, and patience.

Gotcha. I thought I mentioned the CKP system and/or crankshaft position system (same thing). Maybe I didn't.
