Ok, I'm installing the transgo this weekend and looked at the haynes about dropping the pan. So i have to disconnect that shift linkage, ok check. My problem is this, some people have been saying I need to drop the drivers side exhaust member too? I have the deep pan as well on my 01 2wd 4.8.

Can you enlighten me to if most have had to drop that driver's side exhaust member or not, and can I get away with it by just unbolting the flange at the cat? If not what do I need to unbolt and will I need to get new doughnut gaskets?

I'm really hoping that haynes wasn't leading me astray and that GM engineers weren't idots, but more outrageous things have happened. Just trying to get all this straight so when I go to put the transgo in and use the Autozone filter and gasket kit I can actually do it and I'm not stuck with a pan that won't drop all the way down.
    Thanks guys,
    Andrew

I didn't drop my exhaust to pull my pan...

Ok, what's the secret? I had to unbolt mine. Agreif, you don't need new gaskets if you do, I believe they need to be retightened to 37 ft-lbs at the manifold flanges. The shift cable bracket is what needs to be undone, but it is possible to wiggle the pan out without removing it when you undo the exhaust and cross member, but I don't recommend it.....poor shift cable boot

Last time I pulled the pan was over a year ago. It took some dirty talk but came out.

The only PITA was the shift linkage...

Yeah, I went through every dirty word in the book when messing with mine. The bracket is held on with torx bolts, correct? I finally got some aluminum pistons that will work so I will be embarking on this adventure again in the near future!!!

    hmm, mixed bag so far.

How many washers did you put it? More than 1, is that why you are putting in the metal pistons?

I guess there are a few ways to take the pan off. Hitman is a tranny guru, so if he says it can be done that way it can be done. It was just too hard for me to get a rachet to the bracket with the front driveshaft in the way so I had to go the route of undoing the exhaust and cross member. The plastic piston in the 1-2 accumulator just cracks easily. Might as well save you the trouble when you have the accumulator housing out to start with. The gm part # is 24204496.

oh, and i used no washers and billet servos

Actually I used a prybar to bend the shift linkage over and didn't remove that either! lol I then cut the lip off that corner of the pan so it'd go back in. Never crossed my mind to even want to drop the exhaust...seriously.

I am washer-less with both billets also.
