i'm getting ready to start my 5.3 build up and i feel that, since this thing is sitting in the garage, now would be a good time to do some internals work and some work on it. After searching around, i've decided to stroke it out to a 5.7. i'd appreciate any and all suggestions to building this motor up...pushrods, heads, pistons, cam, rockers..anything you would do?

I'm not that "motor" mechanically inclined, but I will tell ya...that 5.3 is a expensive mother to deal with. The 5.7 block for some reason is easier and cheaper to buy parts for and get technical assistance. I had no intentions of boring my 5.3 out...I didn't want to due to I want some long life out of her (let's face it if you knock that 5.3 out that far...you are gonna put the pedal to the medal and wear it out quicker than if it was 350 block already). I shaved mine out 20 one thousandths only to accomadate custom supercharger pistons with valve notches which was to accomadate the expensive heads. $$$$$$$$&# 036;$$$$$$$... I am telling you man, everybody in the motor industry has laughed at me doing all this work to the 5.3. GREAT motor, but you will sink thousands and thousands of dollars into and never get it to act like a 5.7 with only a couple thousand into it(at least that is the rumor...I'll tell you for sure in one more week). That's just my opinion...hell...I still have my 5.3. No wallet...but that 5.3 is intact. LOL Good luck, if I did it all over again...I'd ask myself what is my budget. You gotta have one. And then compare that to just buying a 5.7 and starting there. Ready for this...350 pistons are cheaper than 318's. The freaking lifters on that 5.3 are 40 to 50 bucks a pop. 16 lifters times 40 to 50 dollars equals holy crap!!!! LOL. Everybody has their opinions and quite frankly mine isn't that valuable because of my limited experience level...but my 5.3 is kickin my ass. (don't get me worng, it will kick alot other people's ass too, but probably alot more for less if I would have just went with a 5.7) nevertheless...enjoy and have fun.

It's kinda ironic...I want to make I sure I do it right to, but the good ole boys at Chevrelot and all the others, balance out that power to destruction ratio , so keep in mind...the more horses you add ...the more crap will break , unless of course you prepare for it. But other than that...I am definitely full of some "uh-ohs" on the 5.3 break down. I am actually having timing chain issues right now. The double roller is "supposed" to fit under stock cover. Heard from plenty that it does....NOT MINE!!!! By the way...the crank and rods are the only thing I didn't change on mine. Besides I had the rods machined, after 80K they had thousandths of ovaling in them. I am not sure of the ramification of cuttin .06 out of the 5.3. Keep posting your questions here...these guys will definitely give you pointers, at the very least point you in the right direction. Enjoy

well, it seems that the smartest choice for me would be to bore it to 3.90 and change to ls6 pistons instead of trying to stroke to a 382. can i just get ls6 rods, 918 springs, and a 218/222 cam as well? will i see a decent increase for the work i'm looking at?
