So I have been thinking about maybe cleaning my engine bay. Nothing too serious just maybe rinsing it down. I know you cant get water in the intake and the truck should be running while cleaning. Is it a good or bad idea to spray down inside the bay? Where should I keep away from with the water, and what should I cover? (Electricals)

thanks,

Cover your face.... The power washer will splash back!

I wash mine every chance I get, no problems...

no need to leave the truck running...

spray engine down with foaming engine cleaner...let sit for 5 minutes and pressure wash off. do it again if you have a really funky engine. drive it around until its dry, then spray some foaming tire shine on everything and wipe it down. superclean

I wouldn't recommend it on the belt assembly, could lead to a squeaker.

Just cleaned mine last night. I went and bought some back to black today. All of the plastics seem like they are starting to fade....already. I have been using black magic and was told that was the reason for the fading.

The engine compartment is a lot more tolerant of a power wash than you might think - the eletrical connections all use weather-pak connectors so I say give 'r hell. Just use common sense like you said, don't spray up the intake. Also do not spray directly into the alternator, it's ok if it gets a tad wet but don't try to power-wash it's internals. And don't try to blast the paint right off the frame or firewall; let the chemicals do the work for you rather than trying brute force and blasting it off.

i would say dont spray the engine if its hot. i usually wash the outside of the truck letting it have time to cool down before i spray the engine down. i will always drive straight to the car wash booth and shut it right off before it gets a chance to get too hot.
i spray parts that are metal up close but on the wires keep the pressure off them for the most part.
i have never had a problem in 10 years of doing it that way.

i would not spray a hot iron block with water. i used simple green to clean my engine compartment the other day but u have to dilute it some.
