Thread: Pulley

  1. #1
I went to go install a underdrive pulley in my truck and the guy couldn't take off my original pulley. He tried for about 1 hr. and it didn't move a bit. Any solutions on how to fix the problem?

as long as he is using a three finger puller, then he just didnt try long enough, one hour and one minute woulda prolly done it, it is extremely tough to get off, they are very tight. It is critical that he pull with all three fingers of the puller very evenenly and it will come off. If it is real tight, leave the crank bolt in it but make sure it is screwed out of the crank about a 1/4 in or so, this will keep you from bugering up your threads on the crank.

    hope i helped ya

He probably didnt have the pusher screw down the center of the crankshaft. He was probably pushing against the pulley flange instead. They come off really easy when you do it correctly.

The guy has installed many pulleys. Just last night he installed my friends pulley on a 07 sierra in about 30 mins . He used the 3 finger tool. The bolt was loose to begin with. He tried to install it again or put it just a little but nothing seemed to work. He said maybe it was when they installed my cam the guy heated the pulley so that it can expand to take it off then as it cooled it contracted and got stuck.

Uh....was he trying to pull it off with his hands? You need a gear puller with a long shaft because the center of the crankshaft is really deep. He may have been dead-heading the puller screw. If you get it seated correctly with a long puller screw, it should come off relatively easy...

If that was the case, the guy must have done the entire cam swap in like 3 seconds. With this comment, are you talking about the crank bolt or the actual crank pulley? If he would have heated the pulley to get the crank bolt out, then the pulley would have cooled and contracted properly when you had to install it again. The crank bolt could have gotten slightly warm, but again, it would have cooled and contracted properly before the re-install. Oh, BTW, get a new crank bolt. They should only be used once. If you have already done a cam, that means the crank bolt has been reused once already. You definitely need to get a new crank bolt. They are $7 at the dealership.

I would try and take the pulley off when the motor is still kinda warm. Drive it around, get it to normal temps, then go home and let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Then take off the crank bolt and try to pull the pulley off...

He was using the 3 finger tool. and the truck was warm, i just drove it there and he started right away. the crank bolt was loose to begin with. He barely even used the wrench to take off the crank bolt. the guy has done alot of pulley swaps and know's what he's doing so i doubt he put the tool wrong. It was probably the guy who installed my cam, he's the last person to have touched the truck to mod it...

There is nothing you can do to keep the pulley from coming off. It's a straight bored pulley on a smooth turned shaft. The tension from the bolt is mainly what keeps it from coming off. If the bolt was loose and the pulley spun on the shaft, it is possible that it welded to the crankshaft but I doubt it highly unless you're turning a supercharger. Even SCIV has a S/C that spun the pulley and it didn't friction weld to the crankshaft.

Well, if we can't help you solve the problem, then I'd definitely ask the guy who installed your cam, Ask him how he took off the pulley--and how he put it back on. I know they are dumb questions, but you need to know everything. Maybe he put some Lock-Tite on it...hehe...

I am trying to think back to how I put my pulleys on... Yup, just as we talked about. Actually, the pulley on the alternator gave me more grief than the crank pulley...

Yeah, the guy was showing me that theres nothing to hold it. Like you said its bored straight. I guess i'll have to look for the guy who installed my cam's phone number, its been pretty long...
