painting truck with black primer

so school is coming to an end and i have been thinking of all of the things i am going to do to my truck this summer...rear discs, flush tonneau, weld in rollpan and i think im going to just spray my truck with black can primer until i have the money to get it painted.. probably just flat black? what would be the cons of doing this and what do you guys think about the idea? thanks

just my 2 cents but i say no no no....I am not sure what kind of body work you have done but you did say you were welding in the roll pan. So with that, primer is sorta like a sponge, it will absorb water and then you will see rust....then you will have to take all of that back off and treat the metal with some sort of etching primer or something. Another thing is that the cans of paint you will get arent good and if you plan on doing this thing nice with some good paint then all that you put on should definately come back off. All in all if you plan on driving your truck, leave that factory finish on it since it is a good protector and maybe consider just boltin your roll pan to it until you decide to paint then weld it in so it isnt weathered.

after a few weeks the black primer will look like grey ash.

yeah i have always heard that about primer. it hold moisture. then you will have a bigger problem on your hands.

Have you thought about just painting it with black basecoat? I wonder how that would stand up? I know the guys on Truckin painted their Old Skool truck with a black basecoat/clear that looks like black primer but it&#39;s sealed.

All you would have to do i think is get a basecoat black and add DX995. Its a flattening Agent and It would protect it from the sun and have no shine. No clear or anything has to be put on. DX995 will kind of mike the base coat singlestage.

well yeha i would do something like that for temporary until i could afford a paint job..how hard and how costly would it be for me to paint it with that base coat, or should i might as well just save up and get the color i want? or does anyone know of/ own a body shop that will cut me a really really good deal..

Depends on who you have for paint and body shops in your area. I wouldn&#39;t mess with the paint until you are ready for a finished job. Since you have a fade paint job on there right now, it&#39;s going to be tough to match up short of a full repaint. i guess you knew that already. What color do you want to go with for a total repaint?

From my experience I put the 995 in the clear coat and it flattens it and you will have a long lasting paint job and you can wet sand it and buff it. I have never added it to the base coat. The pic of the 32 prostreet ford we painted using the 995 in the clear. By the way the flames are taped on.
