Alright, today i picked up a 5.7L short block. The guy told me it came out of a 1998 GMC... were these engines considered ls1's? that would be a gen 3 right? if not..... what is it?

that is not a gen3/ls1 based engine. Its a vortec engine and shares no parts with the LS1 engine. The 5.7s were bad about leaking intake/coolant gaskets.

ive been running the block casting numbers... and im getting all kinds of contrasting info. one site says my numbers are from a '95-'96 2 bolt main, one site says its 95-2000 2 or 4 bolt main goodwrench crate motor... wheres a good siteto look at this stuff?

no matter where ya look its still not an ls series, its a gen 2. Think old basic 350 with fuel injection and some other modern updates. LS's started in '97 with the Vette, then in '98 they landed in the F-Bodies and finally in '99 they were put in the trucks and suv's

ok this is making more sense now. its a gen 2, 5.7 350, parts will still be plentiful which is what concerns me. the guy i bought it from said it came from a '98 GMC... so im guessing a sierra sieres pickup, does that sounds right.
yes... sounds like the 350vortec to me

these were gen 1 not 2 engine right? gen 2's would be the lt1 ones right?
I believe you are correct. I mis=typed. Meant Gen1, Gen2 were the reverse cooled LT1 engines in the early mid 90s until 97.
