I am getting ready to put my engine in, its a 5.3. i have reworked the heads, new cam cam bearings, rods and lifters, almost ready to put it all back together and start it for the first time. what oil do you guys recommend to use? for break in as well as from now on.
Royal Purple-because it's expensive and pretty!
Nah, just run dino oil. I use Castol 10w-40 because I always have and never had any problems with it.
Rotella t 15w40
DUH this is a no brainer. Mobil 1 with mobil 1 filter. I denyed my first complimentary oil change on my 2012 because they wanted to put that dextron shit in my truck.

Valvoline VR1 racing oil, it has the additives that the engine needs for start up. Its a good oil to continue using also. The Rotella doesn't have any additives anymore as Luke stated.
Mobile 1 or Royal Purple if you just won the lottery.
Mobil 1 10w-30 with a mobil 1 or wix filter, but preferably mobil 1.
+1 and get it at Costco. The napa gold filter is a wix. The puroilator is also a good choice.Quote:

Brand is really not important to me anymore. Ran the factory 5.3 in my avalanche till 173k on Mobil 1 and the internals still looked like an old cruddy nasty engine.
I actually put some 15W50 Mobile1 in my truck, because it was availible and a good deal. Surprisingly(to me anyways) my valvetrain has quieted down a good bit and my oil pressure is a good bit more consistent.
CASTOL GTX 5w30 and a fram filter, i use it as the breakin and everything after. Just what ive always used so i dont know about everything else. never had any issues with my engine. plus its not the most expensive and if something blows up you wont be pissed about all the money you spent on oil :LOL:

Fram filters are the DEVIL Bobby Boucher! Mine gets Mobil 1 and the biggest Wix I can. I forget the part number but it's twice the size.
amsoil 5w30 and wix filter. mobil 1 burned, royal purple burned, i can go 5k on amsoil and burn less than 1/2 qt and still looks as if it could go another 5k. and thats with 178k miles.
