There are lots of good books available on Amazon.com. Look for LS1/LS6 books from CarTech and HPBOOKS.
are you rebuilding the original engine? what exactly are your plans?
yes i am. so far i have a ls1 out of a 98 camaro, its got everything but the accessories, so far i have bought a deluxe gasket kit, comp cams 212/218 cam, push rods and valve springs. just don't know where to start after the gasket kit.
Head bolts, assembly lube, new piston rings, new cam and main bearings just to name a few things.
im pretty new to the ls style motors but from what ive seen the actual mechanical part of the build should be like any other sbc. based on what u plan to do with the vehicle should determine the build. is it for a basic DD or a race car. with a DD if the bottom end is all good then i would just throw the cam in it change the springs push rods etc. nice port and polish and you should be good to go. if you are doing a complete rebuild might as well get the cylinders honed and get some new pistons and rods
well if its a DD i would just leave the bottom end alone these motors are pretty dependable. dont fix it if it isnt broken. slap the cam in the do the springs rods etc. what are you dropping the engine into?
oh ok well the truck acessories will be perfect. everything will bolt up to the ls1 and you can even use the ls power steeering pump. only thing that wont fit is the lower mount a/c bracket and compressor. you will have to get an aftermarket bracket and you will be able to reuse the stock a/c compressor from that truck. novak makes one, also search "josh powers" he makes a bracket. both move the compressor to the top right side of the engine. this is a pretty popular swap so you should be able to find tons of info pertaining to your exact project.
you said the truck accessories would be perfect, do you mean the current accesories on it(5.7 tbi)?????
no you would have to find accessories from a truck ls motor..5.3 lm7 lq4 6.0 etc..the only thing from the tbi you will be able to use is the a/c compressor. you would need the water pump, and power steering/alternator bracket. get on a few ls forums and look in the for sale section or ebay. There are different accessory brackets out there from the different vehicles these engines came in. corvette, gto, truck. camaro ss etc, try to find the brackets for a truck. keep in mind the front accessories you use will also depend on the intake you decide to use
well from what ive read you get more low end power with the truck intake. so more torque. there is a way to run the ls1 intake with truck accesoories but its a pain. better off going with the truck accessories with truck intake. 5.3 and 6.0 stuff should be the same.
no think it should all be the same.
Front accessory bracket for the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 are the same. If you use the ls1 intake go with the f-body accessory bracket so your intake piping clears the accessories/belt. Simple concept.
What about the wiring harness?
Same for 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0. ECU's are different though. Well, same ECU, just tuned differently. I think the LS1 ECU's are the same actually. Wiring harness is different though.
i would suggest getting all your accesories and intake then go from there. takle the issue as you get to them. if you get a custom harness made you can just let them know what you have and they will make one and tune the pcm and everyhting. nelson is the best uve heard of. not cheap by any means however
So as far as timing chain starter alternater are they all gonna be 5.3 asseccories or do I need to use the ls1 asc
