Cam question...again!

So I have been deciding on a cam to throw into my 5.3l block, and along the way contacted Comp Cams listing the mods going into my 88 GMC Sierra. They forwarded me a cam profile stating that it would yield good gains... thought I would share it with you guys and see what anyone thinks, pros-cons? Is this a streetable cam or is it too mild? Looking to make a fun truck out of it, not necessarily for the strip, but laying some nice burn marks on the ground would be nice!

List and things to come are 3in exhaust, ls1 or ls6 intake, no head work till much later down the road.. planning on keeping it N/A... gearing and stall I am a little unsure about at this point in time but someone's opinion would be helpful since this is my first conversion! Thanks Gang!

That is certainly a streetable cam and not too mild. In fact, IMO you are probably gonna wanna go bigger. Thats not much lift and it has a 5000rpm maximum range??! LS motors love rpm and if I was going to bother putting a cam in I would definitely get one that has a range more like 1200-6500rpm. It all depends on how modified you want to go but IMO If you are gonna get one this small I wouldnt even bother. Youd be better off with an LS6 cam.

i would do like a 212/218 the cam u listed above is not uch bigger than stock

Flattopwill, how well do you like the TR220 was it just what you were looking for or do you wish you went bigger? Also what springs/pushrods did you go with for that cam? Looking around on the internet it seems like quite the popular set-up!

Thanks Blackjack for that thread, surprised I didn't run into it sooner... Good info there! Guess I will do a little more research on those cams although my truck is only a standard cab, and hauling is not so important to me prolly the tr220 will be the weapon of choice, unless someone else has a different opinion I'm all ears for the time being! ALSO: whats the main difference between the 112 and 114 LSA I know the lopiness is different, and although I like lope I want something just a little quieter, would there be any real difference between the two driveability wise?

i know the 112 will be choppier idle. the 114 should be pretty smooth. As far as street driveability, i did advise comp that my truck was daily driven and thats the cam they suggested. I dont go to the track much, just a few times a year. I will be going with the LSR cam myself

I do like the cam very much! I have the 112 LSA and it gives it a mean hot rod sound that gets a lot of attention. There are minor power delivery differences between 112 and 114 LSA but mostly it comes down to the sound and what you want the truck to do. If you just want it to be quiet, smooth, with some more power then go with the 114. If you want that hot rod sound then go with 112. Personally, I love how my whole truck shakes just sitting still and how everyone wants to race lol. Everyone thinks I get bad mileage too which isnt true!
I have stock push rods with LS6 valve springs. I dont recommend this pushrod/spring combo with this cam just because it is stretching the limits of the valvetrain. I did it because I was on a serious budget and was willing to take the risk. If you keep an eye on the forum classifieds you can find some Comp 918 springs that will hold .600 lift for around $100 and some Comp 7.4 hardened push rods for ~$50.

Thanks Flattop I will keep my eye out for those springs/pushrods, and check around the internet some! Ya the 114 LSA I believe I'll like since it will give it that "sleeper" appeal to it, although what muffler are you running with your set-up I have the 70 series flowmaster on mine perhaps that would quiet it down?

Duration is what gives you a choppy idle. Duration is how long the valve is opened. You will notice choppy idles starting around 212 intake duration @ 0.50". More lift means more air and fuel into the cc. The LS6 cam is borderline from smooth to choppy. Its 207/217 .525 lift for the 01's but the 02's have slightly smaller intake duration but more lift. Something like this would be what you are lookin for. I mean hey they put these cams in 405hp motors. These cams in a 5.3 gives 50 hp increase on engine dyno.

There is more than one factor contributing to the idle characteristics. Duration IS how long the valve is open but is not the main factor in deciding idle character. What makes in lope is valve overlap which is heavily influenced by loba seperation (LSA).

Yes that is true. Widening the LSA reduces overlap and narrowing it makes it worse.

that cam is way to small IMO, bigger is better, but you dont wanna go over 600 lift, my cam shakes my truck and it is clearly visible :lol: but i drive it everyday and it is completely streetable, i dont think you'd be very happy with that little cam.

Okay so I called Thunder Racing for a little information on their cams, but also to inquire about the TR220 and its relation to me installing it into my 5.3. Any ways the guy practically was jumping out of his seat about the Cheater v.3 telling me he believes I would be much happier with the results of this cam, and how it dyno'd great numbers on a 5.3 1500! Since I couldn't find too awful much about it I thought I would ask the board and see what everyone here thinks about the specs of the Cheater v.3:

I think thats kinda similar to the Torquer V3. Plenty of duration but you dont lose alot of low end cuz of the overlap. Plent of lift also for more fuel and air. Id say go for it. Its very streetable and will give you lots more torque.

.....im not 100% sure but i think .600 lift is to high for a stock 5.3

Yeah I think ur right cuz I dont think the stock pistons came with valve relief.

Wow thats Wide separation, but it yields a large power band as well, would like to see some #'s on HP & TQ this cam makes, weird specs.

Even if there is enough piston clearance you'll need some serious valve springs to handle over .600 lift. Like some PRC double springs or somethin.

(LSR cam)it is over .600 lift
but its what comp cams recommended. Im sure they did quite a bit of testing on it. On the cam description, it says for 4.8/5.3L small blocks
