I Know Nathan has. Im sure he will chime in and help you out.
What are you after in there? It matters because of what is in the way. Also matters if it had D06 console and what seats it has. These are layered meaning there is the outside trim, the plastic support frame, the metal structure, then the HVAC case. The crossbar is two piece so that's another factor on where you're going....
i think its 7 #7 across the dash, 2 phillips heads on the sides underneath the pop off panels. the dash bezel just pops off, once the phillips and # 7s are out pull out the air vents pretty sure theres a philpps behind each of em, then reach inside the vents and push in on the white tabs to remove the OH S*** handle there will be tabs on both sides have someone pull out on it while you push the tabs or just bite it and pull...thats my method, dont forget to remove the daytime running lights sensor. hope this helps after all thats done the dash will be a little tight just pull and it will come out.
I thought he meant the dash not just the cover. My bad.
i dont know what he means either i just wanted to look smart  ive only removed my dash to the fire wall about 20 times hahaha
Only 20? That's more than me.
Note to myself: Must re-route 2 miles of Viper wiring to make way for new Trick Glovebox Turbo with Air to AC Intercooler and passenger downpipe leg warmer roll cage combo.
Sensor Lambo referred too not the stoutest and wire short so take a little extra time once you get the dash broken loose or you might be using a little added persuader to hold it in place when you go back like I did. :(
Here is what I am doing. I purchased a black truck, but it has brown/tan interior,.and seats are not powered, center flip console is warn, all in all nice but for someone else. SO i purchased the grey/smoked interior from a 1/2 excab truck, powered seats, fixed concole, etc etc. complete dash, upper console, console, everything. And the carpet, and all rear, and door plastic pieces off a reg. cab. REg cabs dash was a little worse off. Going to flip the interior to a grey look.
I was thinking the dash would be held in by only a few big bolts and call it a day. But if I can just remove the top and all the plastic sweet. I was thinking of hitting the dealer ship here to see about a drawing giving me the lay of the land but any info yall can supply would be much appreciated.
G has the proper advice then. It's all held on with 7mm screws, Philips screws, and clips. You don't need to take the whole thing out.
Great hopefully the new parts arrive today or Monday. Have to put into storage figure I would start with the hardest first, the dash area. Then move onto the headliner, seats and carpet....
New trucks muffler has got to go. Drone from hell 40-60mph. :( going to move the outlet from under the truck and see how much that helps, other wise got a magnaflow muffler laying around will put it on.
Thanks for the information guys.
Rick
The headliner is more work and more frustrating working over your head. The dash stuff won't take more than half an hour. The rear seat is a bigger PITA too.
Yeah back seat is kinda a pain
I did not get the back seat. this going into a RCSB. I just wanted different seats with inside arm rests. :) and solid console in the middle.
Thank Garrisson, he was the one that told you what to do and how to do it. I answer too many questions with more questions.
Thank you
Garrisson, I really appreciate it.
great info, but what if someone wanted to pull the hvac unit? what would also have to be done? remove the whole dash?
Yes. Sort of. If you pull all the plastic and radio and HVAC controls and switches and IPC and column you can get the substructure out. Then you have to drain the heater core and recover the AC. Unbolt the cross bar to the right of the column to swing it back out of the way. Pull the screws from the engine side of the firewall and some inside the truck. Disconnect the wiring harness and set aside. Lift the entire case out in one chunk, throw on floor, cuss, then do repairs as needed before reassembly.
holey moley lol!!! well i dont have ac so no frig. needs recovering, damn you gotta pull the column wtf lol!!! think i'll leave it for awhile lmao!!
hahaha im in the same boat Rick...
my black 02 has tan interior WTF!!!
why does GM put tan with a black truck??
But... ive already traded out the seats with 2 grey cloth power seats with the armrests. i just need the rest of the panels now... i was thinking of just painting everything though
anytime man, ive done it a million times takes me like 5 mins now
im just gonna chime in and say you dont have to pull the column i never did, but there is alot of crap to pull ive done it twice, the column will just fall down and sit in the drivers seat once the bolts are removed, youll need a 13mm and an 11mm for some reason they put 2 different sizes on it, the big aluminum thing is held on by 4 #15s i believe it looks heavy but only wieghs about 2 lbs, nathans info is spot on but ive done it so many times ive learned some short cuts once the dash is outta the way and you remove the bolts from the fire wall side the big black thing will just about fall out, when you do drop the column down watch out for your shifter linkage cus it can get caught up also you gotta remove all that crap from underneath the column or you'll break stuff....:( i know personally
I agree the column doesn't have to come out it can drop down but to me it's easier to pull it out than work around it. Takes 5 minutes to pull it. If all you're doing in HVAC G has the best idea because you're doing all the work on the RH side of the truck.
I thought about that too, but desided to just by all the parts and swap them out. Trying to keep it looking factory as possible. I figure there was no way I could match the grey paint. Hopefully the dash shows up with minimum to scratches. Going to power wash the carpet. ITs clean but figure its out might as well giveR a washing.
Anyone want a Tan interior let me know I am sure I ill have all the parts in shortage .
600.00 for all the stuff out of the excab, less rear seat less head liner, and all the rear trim and carpet and headliner from the short cab. was nice to find 2 donor trucks at the same location.
wow thats a good deal man!!
How to: Take out Dash (nbs) - GMFullsize Forums This is a good reference to look at if you need pictures.
thanks. more help the better. :)
Working on getting the dash cover out. Wow lots of bolts think I got them all but still its in there and not moving yet. :( Working on trying to find more holding points... Having the replacement pc you would think would help but nawwww, its not showing me whats holding it now. more work soon all the parts are for sale. head liner done, upper console done needs a little tweeking but done.
A-pillar moldings, two phillips on each side behind the fuse covers, 4-5 7mm screws behind the cluster bezel, one phillips behind each RH vent, grab handle. I think G posted all that already. Pull is straight back, it has spring clips near the windshield and some around the rear edges.
its 90% done, just need to install the drivers side door and the seats. The new dash cover had a few broke clips near the widow so I used some plastic glue and did a littel repair, letting is sittign for a few days before installing it. The biggest time has been cleaning all this plastic and old carpet. WOW was is loaded with dirt.Wiping all the backsides to remove any dust and hopefully older truck smell. lol
Grey interior, 2 seater, over head console, look SOOOOOOO much better in my opinion in this truck. And making it a 2 seater again just looks the part I think. Might need to get some badges made. sbSS... :)
Tan stuff is all up for sale. 300.00 + freight. I would replace the carpet or give it a good steam cleaning. Someone spilt a coke or something like that...
I am looking for the vent diverter in my 04' Avalanche. It is stuck in the defrost position. It's not the hvac controls because I changed them already and it didn't solve the issue. Any help would be appreciated.
Pull off the dash, close it manually, then when winter comes and you need defrost, open it back up
I live in florida, need a/c in the winter too! ;)
The problem is I don't know where it is. How much of the dash do i have to pull?
:confused:Well what I need is the mode actuator.. It's under the drives side of the dash and I can see it pretty easy. But, how the hell do I get to the top screw to get it out?!
To remove the dash tilt your steering wheel down, apply e brake, put truck in nuetral, pull off the dash bezel around the speedo return truck to park, remove screws from dash youll need a 7mm nut driver/socket pull off fuse panel cover unscrew the 2 phillips head screws do the same on passenger side then pull out your passenger side air vents and unscreww those phillips acrews then reach inside the vents and push in on the 2 white clips on both sides holding the dash handle in and pullout on the handle at the same time, then turn the daytime headlight sensor until it goes down in it hole grab the dash on both sides and pull out, it will slide right out , there you go now you can reach the module.:thumb:
