Got a Nelson tune

Got a Nelson tune. Lets start from the begining. My truck with a K&N CIA,Pacesetter shorty headders, stock Y-Pipe, 3 in. cat back with a cut out and Flowmaster 40 series , Diablo Sport tuner, Ran 15.70's at 86 m.p.h with a 2.40 60 ft. on 30 x 10.50 slicks at 4200 ft. of elevation.

I installed a GMPP LS1 hot cam with the same set up as listed above and dropped to a 16.28 at 87 m.p.h.. My 60 ft. was 2.70. I understand the loss of E.T. becouse my 60 is crap, becouse the cam does not make the low end the stock cam did.But it pulls better up top. The salution? A Nelson tune and a Yank 3000 stall.

I installed the new Nelson tune and nothing. It idels worse, it surges, has less low end , runs rich, revs and does not pull, and hold gears too long at cruising speeds. I have not installed the stall yet. When I ordered my tune, I told Nelson I was putting in a 3000 stall. Being I installed the tune with out the stall could this by why my truck runs so bad now? I am going to put in the stall on Saturday. I called Nelson up and they said I could send it back for a retune but I'm going to wait and see if the stall fixes it. What do you guys think?

Takes about a 100 miles or so for the tune to "settle in"...the 3K stall would probably help as well...

Well I bougt it so I'll keep it. Hope you are right.

I'm surprised they even tuned it considering the mismatched combo you have.

I have same issue with both of my tunes haven't been happy with any of my tunes from nelsons truck ran slot better with my diablo sport hand held

What do you mean?

HOT cam is a horrible choice for that truck IMO and on a stock stall it's no wonder it got slower.

I have had nothing but success with Nelson performance. If there is any problems i know they would fix it ASAP.

Something doesn't sound right, are any ses lights being set?

You might have gotten a bad upload, not sure.

Get with Mel and we'll send out another pcm.

Even a stock pcm will run better than that, so I'm assuming a corrupt upload.

Well lets try to fix it.
I need some scans and what is the truck doing that isn't up to your performance expectations.
There's always a reason, we'll figure it out.

Nelson's tune ( mail order ) is by far the best i ever used, and yes i have used a few, one thing about allen, if theres a problem with the tune and you feel its not right call him or send him a pm or even mel which now handles all the calls. theyre very prompt now and they'll get ya taken care of quick, you just have to ask questions if you feel theres a problem with your tune. go to the source and resolve it ;)


one thing i never understood, its it true you have to give a tune time to settle in, i never did and never had any issues i put it in and run the dog out of my setup lol.. i dont have time to put 100-300 miles on a tune!!!

I personally love my nelson tune. To this day it is hands down the best purchase I have made for my truck. To top everything off their customer service is out of this world and that is the biggest deal to me.

I am on my 3rd tune now from nelson and have never had any problems. I had a hypertech at first then switched to the nelson and it was a world of difference. I can deffently say my truck would not have just put down 325hp on dyno with out my nelson tune. By far the best $400 bucks I have spent on my truck.

running that cam without a verter and expecting results when your tune is specifically for that verter is not gonna happen.

install the veter and upload it again like Nelson said.

on a side note, i hope you got pushrods and spring for that cam too.

Yeah I got springs and hardend pushrods. Its just the idel in park and neutral is really bad. It sound like I have blower serge.The whole truck rocks side to side. In drive at a stoplight you can't even hear the cam.I'm shure they will fix it. I'm just telling the facts about my experience.

Did you order the tune for your current setup or one you are going to have? Two different things entirely...

That is why I told them I tune it for a 3000 stall I am instaling this weekend.That is a good cam. It pulls hard on the highway. So some more gear and the stall should make it fine at the track. So what is mixed matched? Long duration cam = big stall and gears. I have the gears now I have the stall. I knew the truck would lose bottom end with this cam, hence the stall I bought.

For the one I have pluss the Cam and stall. So I told them K&N CIA, Shorty headders, stock Y-pipe, 3 inch exhaust with a cut out- Flowmaster 40 series- exits in stock location, 3.73 gears, LS1 hot cam(525/525 112 LSA 271 intake 280 exhaust advertised) and the 3000 stall. The only thing left to install is the stall. I'm not mad or anything, we will just see how thing turn out.

Long duration for massive vehicle size and low lift....combined with a stock converter. Even a 3K will be too tight. Need more lift and stall or less duration AND the 3K.

I think you got a little ahead of yourself on this one. There's literally hundreds of years of experience amongst all the members on here...all you have to do is ask the question (or use the search function). The combo of too big of a cam, too small of a stall, possibly a bad upload have all conspired against you...IMO

put the stall if no difference im sure nelson will get you fixed up,good luck

I got the hotcam with a nelson tune and it runs crazy good. I noticed the way you have the cam described is different than I did. I put it as 219/228 .525/.525 112LSA Mines doesn't sound super cammed in drive either, but it idles great, starts right up and pulls like no tomorrow. I promise you, it's the best purchase you can do hands down. Hope things turn out better.

I have only heard good about nelson's tunes....i hope to get mine soon after i get my headers

ive bought probably 8 or 9 nelson tunes.
they have all been good to go. i have had to send one back for a little extra work. but thay have always been spot on.

ya, nothing but success with Nelson Performance tunes and service. They will have my business from now on.

i'm sure Allen will take care of it, just give him a little time.

With a high end cam and no stall in a truck that size... yeah I honestly think it would be normal for a tune to be a bit off. Its mail order from a good distance. NP will make it all better. Allen nails probably 199 out of 200 tunes he mails. .5 percent is better then you will find ANYWHERE else.

Should have gotten the Nelson Super tune 5000 like me

Yeah, Nelson called me today. They are going to take care of it. I let them listen to my truck surging over the phone. They said it was a bad up load. They are taking care of the problem.They are good people. The Hot Cam pulls way hard from 3k all the way up to 6500 or so. So I have no idea why you guys sat it is a bad choice of cam.I like it. It just has no low end is all. If I can go from a 2.7 60 ft. to a 2.2 or better with the stall I will be pumped. I was hopeing I would go from 15.70s to 14.90s with the cam, tune, and stall. I don't see why not.

My truck only weighs 4890 with me in it and a 1/4 tank of gas. Thats really not that heavy. I have a Lincoln that I dragrace that weighs 5800 lb with a Lunati 292 cam in it on a 112 lsa. and it does a 1.80 60 ft. It runs mid 13s at 101 mph. That car is heavy.

Ic where the guys are coming from saying its a bad choice. Imo I think your times would be much better than a 14.90 with a better thoughtout cam choice. There are guys running faster than that on a stock cam N/a. JUst my 2 cents

Probbly so but remember, I am at 4200 ft of elevation. Everything is slow here.My truck was running 14.90s in Oaklahoma with a hypertech tune. Then again they were at 1100 ft of elevation. So what would be a good cam for my truck then? Its nothing to change out the cam.
