Is this where the cool kids hang out?

I was cruisin ebay the other day, and stumbled across a 5.3l with 67kmiles for sale. 450 later and a trip to bryan, i have a motor. Anyways, i'm starting out with what was once an atmos energy fleet truck. Poor thing. Those people drive em like they stole em. Valve train in this 4.8l is noisy to say the least. New rockers, comp cams pushrods, and plenty of fresh oil later, nothing same noisy cylinder bangin in the background. So I did what i knew how to, i found a motor, bought a but load of cheap parts and now i gotta decide what to keep and what to sell. This is my first experience with a Gen III chevy, I gotta say, wow! I'm impressed, except when it malfunctions, like any other engine before, it's still a pain in the rear. But easy as pie to work on.
I came here for several things, but a few are very important. First of all, to learn. Books can only tell so much. Its like reading a fairy tale, these guys ripped and engine apart, installed a bunch of high tech gadgets, and whirly-gigs, And presto, an LS1 that pumps out 450rwhp and they didn't hit a single bump on the way. I wish i could be so lucky.
I also came here to help, i'm going to college for physics and engineering. . . I don't know everything, but i've learned many interesting things that i can share. And if i had not been digging and searching for the past 3 years like a coke fiend on shag carpet, i would not know what i do. So if i can add something interesting to a post, i'll give the best and factual advice i can come up with.
And last, i came to belong. wow this sounds like some Social Mission Statement. . . anyways, there are not many gearheads in my area with the exception of the local dirt-track racer, Who is still running the same old sbc they had for the last 50 years. I work in a machine shop and i'm the one who will always jump over people to pull broken studs in heads, and reweld block and anything i can get my hands on to give me experience in automotive fields.
Anyways, i'm full of it, so let me drain a little off on you guys, maybe you can put it to better use.
